True story -- I knew a couple for a few years. Not too well, but my oldest daughter was friends with their daughter so we saw each other from time to time. I knew the mother was from Moscow. Heavy Russian accent, very little English, so conversation with her was very limited. Her husband was easier to talk too. Often hard to understand, but it seemed he knew more English, and his accent was not quite so heavy.

I knew them for over a year before I found out that he was not Russian. He was born in Canada, a native English speaker, but between very bad teeth, a speech impairment, and a drinking problem, I would have sworn that the guy was a Russian immigrant.

Could have been from Newfoundland or Cape Breton Island. Islands are like that.
