The year 1894 was to be a bonanza year for Sergei Rachmaninov. The 21 year old composer produced a set of 4-handed piano duets labeled simply Six Pieces, Opus 11.

The first is a contemplative boat song.

Rachmaninov: Barcarolle, Op. 11/1

The second is a lively tune with a beautiful “trio” section.

Scherzo, Op. 11/2

The third is a sad folk theme.

”Russian Theme”, Op. 11/3

The fourth shows a fun-loving side of the composer.

Waltz, Op. 11/4

The fifth is a little love song.

Romance, Op. 11/5

The final piece is a Russian folk theme used by many composers, including Beethoven. What an amazing ending!

”Gloria”, Op. 11/6
