I did the math. The defense was being covered by the state's own atty office. She claimed she was worried about all the money it was costing the state, but that amount was, well, infinitesimal compared to the state budget and compared to the the tax increase she levied on oil production.
She wanted to cash in and was bored with the job. And she proceeded to cash in, milked the potential of a presidential run for as long as she could to maximize her book sales and speaking fees, and make fools of her boosters.

Your statement is pure horse hockey. The laws on the books in Alaska at the time, forbade ANY public monies from being spent by the Governor for defense against ethics lawsuits.
