But Buckley was the Station Chief. Not the Ambassador.
The point is that Buckely was CIA undercover using State Department as his cover.
He knew he was in danger.
He was warned.
He went out and about saying he was safe because of his contacts, etc... and went to work the same way every day as routine.
The Ambassador to Indonesia left Indonesia right about the time the CIA was overthrowing Sukarno and went to head up the East-West center - known for training CIA operatives. East -West helped trained operatives for Operation Phoenix and had a similar program for Indonesia.
Point being - Ambassadors can work with the CIA , too. There is no doubt in my mind that Stevens helped overthrow Qaddafi.
