Sufis in Islamic countries are considered heretics and are big targets for “orthodox” Muslims, although in the West, Sufis, who are often Western converts, actually do a lot of advocating for orthodox (that is, vicious) Muslims.
Do you know if he was part of the Marabitun movement? This was popular among British intellectuals - and still is - and has made inroads in Latin America and the United States, through European convert immigrants. Some of members of ETA became Muslims through this group. It’s not Sufism, though.
That said, I don’t think he was killed because he was a Sufi, or gay or anything else other than the fact that he was an American and represented America there.
