'Some of the most brutal and horrifying atrocities of the Nazis at war are laid bare in secretly recorded conversations of captured German soldiers published in Britain for the first time today.
The prisoners, mostly ordinary soldiers, sailors and airmen as opposed to SS hardliners, are overheard bragging about shooting women and children for sport as well as raping and slaughtering innocent civilians.
But unbeknown to them, British and U.S. intelligence were secretly eavesdropping on their private chats.
Transcripts made from the astonishingly candid recordings sat gathering dust on the shelves of the National Archives in Kew, all but forgotten until they were picked up by historian Sönke Neitzel in 2001.
His subsequent book 'Soldiers; diaries of fighting, killing and dying', caused a sensation when it was published in Germany last year. And next week it will be published in English for the first time.'

Yep. My Grandfather (same guy I commented on earlier in the thread) tried to find his relatives in Dresden after the war was over, and before he returned home. He thought perhaps he could help them out somehow.
He was unable to find them, and not for lack of trying (As well as being an officer in the Army, Grandpa was a *very* capable man). Not only were all of the relatives gone, but everyone who knew them was gone, all traces of where they lived were gone. No buildings, roads, no local government, no nothing.
I’ve seen that video clip. No sympathy here.
German elites and their 'group-think'.... they all knew - they were all in on it. They thought they were above having to be decent. They chose "Joos' as their primary victims of choice - but evil runs over it's borders... Russian children, Polish women... anyone in their way.
On the bright side, Germans aren't having children - in 200 years even the German language will be dead... not enough narcissistic self centered Germans are having children to keep the group going... At this moment - that feels like a good thing. (I'll get over it - and remember to hate the ideas behind the Germans at the time - and not hate them - sometimes it's a stuggle.)
When we liberated France our soldiers almost universally had no need to rape anyone - they were not only seen as heroes - they had money and food and chocolate and nylons.
When we moved on to Germany they thought we were going to met out the same treatment the Germans inflicted upon Europe - but our boys (by in large) were too used to getting it ‘on the cheap’ to be too interested in the horror of violent rape.
“We f*cked their mothers for chocolate bars.” as Lenny Bruce famously opined. But we (largely) saw no need to rape anyone.
The story reveals that murder was a sport and a tourist attraction. It wasn’t just war, it was civil murder on a very large scale.
Anyone thinking somehow the Germans were a unique bunch and it couldn’t happen here knows nothing of the violence of the liberal. They’d love to do it here to us.
“You will on November 6, 2012.”
I bet you won’t again six months later.
Thanks for posting this. I just pre-ordered it from Amazon. Release date is September 25th.
Indian POWs were generally treated pretty well, captives of Indians weren’t as lucky.
A captive of Indians if he was taken alive, was likely to serve as the Indian town’s entertainment for a few days as the women and children, mothers and fathers all watched the show put on by their leadership.
These Indian tortures weren’t atrocities that occasionally happened during the heat of battle, by renegade civilians, these were the formal entertainment of the communities, conducted formally and as a part of their culture, and for public consumption and training purposes for everyone, including the children.
Although my father and his parents had already come to the U.S. from Holland in 1912, the small village he was born in was almost totally destroyed by Allied bombing during WWII. The village sits in the Breskins area, which was heavily occupied by the Germans due to the nearby port. About the only thing that survived in the village was a windmill from the 1800’s. When my son and I visited the place (Schoondijke) back in 2006, the hotel we stayed at, (the only one in the village), had an aerial photo of the destruction.
-— Indoctrinated since their childhood by Nazi propaganda into believing they were supermen who could take what they wanted, defeat and capture had clearly not tilted their world view one bit. ——
Huh. Imagine that.
The full flowering of Bismark’s compulsory govt schools — the same schools that Horace Mann imported to America.
Bump for later.
Years ago i had an old VFW magazine article about the White Woman Of the Seneca, Mary Jemison.
The article described her first husband as having earned the respect of his community by coming up with a new form of entertainment.
Sheninjee had thought to take the children of the white mothers they had captured, and cover the children in clay, and roast them alive over a spit, while the mothers watched, I forget what they did with the meat, but at the time it was already soaking into me that Indian atrocities were not random horrors and crimes done by psychopathic killers hidden among the populace, or a few stray men pushed over the line in war. These were community affairs a culture.
In Indian life, the Mayor, the City Council and the entire town welcomed home the GI’s and prepared to make the next three days, or week if they were lucky, a celebration of serial killer type torture, and the screams of the dying. They would even nurture and refresh the victims to sustain the joyous activity.
I have read old books from Indian experts of the 1800s that say the children in some tribes were expected to torture and study animals that they could get their hands own, to learn how pain could be maximized, and delivered.
We read many accounts of raiding parties where, if they thought that they weren’t being pursued, they may take a couple of days off during the trip home, to torture to death a young teen girl, in a truly expert, methodical, formal manner.
Old books about the U.S. Army tell us that American GIs, actually did spend precious funds on small handguns for their young wife to kill herself and the children, if capture looked imminent. I think they knew things, that we aren’t told.
It is interesting to read accounts from the past, and to see how the people actually dealing with the Indians thought about the Indians, versus the New York City Easterners and writers.
Stone age primitive people do these things.
According to classical writers the ancient Irish, Celts, Picts & some of the Germanic tribes did something similar.
—— German elites and their ‘group-think’.... -——
They were indoctrinated into a belief system that considered other ethnicities and races to be less human, or sub-human. It helped them to rationalize their atrocities.
The same propensity for genocide exists in Islam, which regards Christians and Jews as lesser beings, and the rest of humanity as worthless.
Similarly, in Darwinian theory, the weak, and even entire races, can be regarded as “less evolved,” or unfit for survival.
Ideas have consequences. Best to oppose them in the academy, before the shooting starts.
