I remember reading somewhere that the name Mohawk was a corruption of a local Indian dialect term for man-eater.

Stone age primitive people do these things.
According to classical writers the ancient Irish, Celts, Picts & some of the Germanic tribes did something similar.

Cannibalism was well known among Indians, even in the mid 1800s, the Texas Rangers mention a successful battle against the Comanche, and how the local settlers were disturbed to find that the cooking pots that they had lent to the Indian allies of the Rangers, had been used to cook meals of Comanche flesh.
