The speculation that I found intriguing was the idea that Stevens was already dead and the redness of the upper torso was caused by strangulation -- possibly a lynching -- rather than suffocation from smoke inhilation. But I'm not a medical person.
Wouldn’t the redness of his back be caused by him being dragged?
His face being red would be from hanging down.
You may not be a medical person but you are exactly where I was, a medical person, when I first saw the pics. No soot and not enough swelling for smoke inhalation.
