The EU elites dont think so. Their goal even way back in the 50s was for an ever-closer union among the peoples of Europe (so printed right on the first line of the 1957 Treaty of Rome after naming the heads of state of Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands), which frankly sounds Orwellesque in and of itself.

Yes. the commercial union was fine, but I wonder if a defensive pact will really mean that Germany would fight Russia if it invades Estonia or Latvia...
