CHAPEL HILL -- UNC-Chapel Hill leaders on Thursday promised different ways of doing business to prevent academic misconduct related to student athletes, including a new name for the beleaguered African and Afro-American Studies department.
Some of the changes had already been announced; other initiatives were new. But the goal was clear deans, faculty members, department heads and Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham lined up to convince a UNC Board of Governors review panel that they would do whatever it takes to recover from perhaps the campus worst academic and athletic scandal.
They pledged more faculty involvement in athletics, a revamped African studies department, new oversight rules for academic administrators, changes to the tutoring program for athletes and a strategic plan for the universitys entire sports enterprise.

If I’d only stuck with Black Studies I’d be Black by now.
why aren’t there white studies? or red studies?? or affirmative action white studies?
If one has a degree in African studies or women’s studies, can one expect to earn a higher wage delivering pizzas?
There are RED studies! bho MAJORED in RED studies!
“Integrity didnt happen”
Love to watch’em play, but...
Glad they got caught with their knickers down...couldn’t have happened to a more lib school. Most of the teaching staff is probably in Charlotte this week wearing Code Pink vaginas.
Maybe they can hire Lizzie Warren to teach there.....she’s black.....at least she could be if there’s some money in it for her.
And state universities should stop handing out taxpayer subsidized "athletic scholarships" (which phrase, by the way, is oxymoronic).
African/Women's-studies grads, when they get jobs, become legislative aides to Democrats, or corporate "diversity" or HR workers.
It must work better in basketball than football.
Whoa...that’s really going to fix the problem. Maybe they can appoint a committee and in a few years they can report that they are changing the coarse title to “African Studies.”
As long as they can find 7- footers who can dunk the ball, that’s all the studying they need to do. They’ll make millions without a suspect NC sheepskin.
Whatever you do, you pinheads in The Peoples’ Republic of Chapel Hill (as we call it ‘round these parts), do NOT even consider the most obvious path: eliminate this IDIOTIC, racist, waste of money and time and effort known as “Black Studies” or “Afro-American Studies” or “Negro Studies” or “Sorry Excuse for An Easy Grade for Bros Studies”.....whatever the hell you want to call this abomination.
No she’s not. Lizzie is a Native-American with, perhaps?, a touch of African-American. Just look at those cheekbones..... and that Clairol hair.
Wow, I never knew Chapel Hill had it real bad with political correctness.
They'd be lucky to be hired as drivers.
There is no good in allowing such degrees. It's like awarding a degree in "underwater basket weaving", yes you have a degree, but you are now in debt (most students) and your degree is fundamentally ignored by the business community, or even a scientific community.
What are you going to do with that useless piece of paper? Convert it to a Masters Degree in Liberalism or Community Organizing? What a waste of time and money.
Mike Adams, where are you?
"An internal campus review found 54 courses in that department, many heavily attended by athletes, that were no-show classes with little or no faculty supervision. Many courses were linked to former department chairman Julius Nyangoro, who retired under pressure this summer, and to Deborah Crowder, a former department manager who left the university in 2009."
Oh heavens, trust me......the whole town is eaten up with it (despite its charm....).
