Wanda Snead wants the same thing for her family, her community and her country: Someone who will take charge of this mess that is happening in our economy and get the country moving again.
Snead, 56, and her husband, Sam, 64, run a real estate company in this charming Northern Virginia town at the base of Shenandoah National Park, where majestic Skyline Drive meanders down to North Carolina.
They have owned the company for more than 30 years. In 2009 they had ten agents and two offices; today they have three agents and one office.
We are very fortunate and blessed to be able to keep our doors open still, but it has been a struggle, she said. Housing keeps Americas economy going, she said, and Obama has clearly never understood that.
Snead and her husband are not fanatical Republicans. They are independent voters who, for the first time, have a political sign in front of their business along John Marshall Highway, which runs through the center of town.
Armando Torres, 53, a Democrat from Bristow in suburban Northern Virginia, is a master electrician and engineer; he also owns a small property-management business.
We have just been devastated, not only in this economy but in the decisions we have to make for our future, he said.
Torres works as an electrical engineer during the day, then runs his own business after punching out. He worries about his employees every minute of every day: Its gotten to the point where I am not bringing in enough to make payroll, which means I am either laying people off or borrowing money.
He and his wife, Kim, said Romney has their full support in November.
It is vital that he wins, Torres said emphatically.

The VA gop hasn’t had a ground game in awhile.
I am not a member of the gop. However here in VA we have an open primaries and I did vote in the last two gop primaries. Those lists of who voted are provided to the parties. Do you know how many door hangers or campaign circulars I’ve received?
Zero.
I think Romney will carry nine of the eleven states you referenced as certainties; and of the six “potentials” you mentioned, Romney MAY carry one. There is no way in hell Romney will carry Illinois of Washington, and if those states were even remotely close the well-oiled voter fraud would ensure an Obastard victory in this states. I think Romney has a shot at Connecticut, and maybe even Minnesota; but it would take a miracle for him to carry Oregon and New Jersey.

Its the polar opposite in tidewater. Odd that the willard campaign seems to be writing off this area. Odder still in that the Governor is from this area. Maybe that’s the issue. He’s the only statewide pol from the area and he is not too popular right now because of the tolls.
I’m afraid that the map of Virginia is like the map of the US, 2008: most of the land area goes to the Republican, but the Democrat cleans up in the urban areas. Virginia has a lot of leftists in the close in NVA suburbs and arty places like Old Town Alexandria. It also has many poor and/or ignorant minorities who will vote for Obama.
Sometimes I’m working very late, so late that I have a chance to talk to the cleaning crew coming in at 11 p.m. I was watching the GOP convention online last week when a very nice Eastern European lady came in to dust the office. Very worthwhile person, extremely hard-working, smart, focused, organized, a Christian, has education from her home country. But her English is so awful that she couldn’t understand the issues. She was very proud that she was a new US citizen and this is the first election in which she’ll be able to vote.
“Who are you going to vote for?” I asked.
“I vote Obama. He good. Happy. Other man, no. Eh. Not help so good poor womans like me.”
As you see, it’s pretty difficult to have an in-depth conversation about sociopolitical issues with people in this situation. They’re not going to read and analyze, but they’re sure-God going to vote.
Anyone from Eastern Europe who’d lived under the thumb of communism would be voting for Romney.
Would you mind sharing this lady’s country of origin?
I don’t want to out her too much. She speaks in a stumbling way about how terrible communism was. She says her country has elected some socialist types again recently, (if I understand her correctly, which is questionable). It’s so hard to explain what Obama has done wrong to someone whose English is so very limited.
She HATES Russia and Russians. Nothing PC there! “Bad people, all bad. Women bad. I see, eh? Yes, bad.”
Thanks. It’s funny that she realizes communism is a bad deal and yet she somehow doesn’t see that BO is a communist too and wants to duplicate the failed policies of communist countries in our country.
From what I’ve read of overseas press, some countries are still enamored of BO’s celebrity persona and don’t examine his policies at all. I can think of at least one Eastern European country (one which should DEFINITELY know better!) and one Western European country who are guilty of this. It’s very disappointing, when people don’t study history.
She’s in her late fifties so she has seen communism up close and personal. As I said, she is actually quite well-educated, but her English is so bad she could never hope to do what she did before she came here. I doubt she reads anything much in English. She is absolutely not a liberal—has complete contempt for anyone who doesn’t work as hard as she does. Exactly the kind of immigrant we need. Lots of guts. But she just sees smiling media pictures of Obama and doesn’t realize he’s a commie too.
My point is, I bet there are a lot of people like that, people who are voting for Obama because they aren’t informed. If the nation is going down into the septic tank, it’s Bush’s fault, surely.
If she’s an educated person, it would be good if she could find a conservative group of people who share her heritage and speak her language, and can set her straight. It’s too bad that she’s influenced by (biased) American media. I suppose in her home country the communists didn’t smile as much and didn’t make appearances on Dancing with the Stars.
story was about the people, i don’t write headlines
I interviewd over 100 people only used 2 because they captured what the rest said all either Dems or Indies
Interesting that you’re posting here. Thanks for the feedback.
With all respect, I think the article is misleading. Every poll I’ve seen of late puts VA in the close to tied category. You got to “VA is a tossup” at the end of the article. I also have to wonder where you did your interviews. All in the beltway area or within a stone throw? Southside? Tidewater? Western VA? Was every 5th person black as is the population of VA?
Convention or no, I still think VA is in the too close to call category. Hussein won by I think 10 pts in VA in 08. Not even close. Elections don’t normally shift by that great of a margin.
