Howie thread for the week starting with his Sunday Boston Herald column about "Mumbles" Menino speaking at DNC
Sunday column ping. McScreamer in for Howie on Monday
Hello mutter, hello falter
Mumbles to give DNC delegates an earful
By Howie Carr | Sunday, September 2, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists
Clint Eastwood, move over. Here comes Mumbles Menino.
What an honor the mayor will be addressing the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte on Wednesday. OK, so its not exactly prime time 5 p.m. but thank God for C-SPAN, because well be able to record everything.
You can bet Hizzoner will be splinkin from the heart. Im great to be here, the ionic mayor will say. You dont hear many politicians anymore who use youse as the plural of you, or who begin sentences, So I says. Stand by Charlotte. Here comes Mumbles.
But first theres tomorrows Labor Day breakfast at the Copley Plaza here in Boston. All the corpulent pinky-ring thugs will be assembled. Also there will be Granny Warren, who is desperate to get Mumbles machine in her corner for the Nov. 6 showdown against Scott Brown.
Two years ago, GOP candidate for auditor Mary Z. Connaughton had a 40,000-vote lead. But Suzanne Bump won the election by rolling up a 95,000-vote margin in Boston, compliments of Mumbles.
Thats why Scott Brown goes out of his way to never say a bad word about Mumbles, not even after the Chick-fil-A fiasco. Brown dreams of at least keeping the mayor on the sidelines. Hopes burns eternal, as Mumbles would say.
This Wednesday night speech is another part of the campaign to get Mumbles on board for the fake Indian. Hes only slotted for five minutes, but that should be enough to get the delegates attention.
What a story Mumbles has to tell, about Boston, Massachusetts, 375 years and making.
Its a tight-night community, and you can go to any neighborhood in the Boston. For almost 20 years now, Mumbles has been tryin to bridge the grap between various groups, and theyve done a great job of many different ways.
As Mumbles continues speaking, heads will begin to turn. Who is this man? What language is he speaking? Whats up with his tongue? Where did he go to college?
UMass of I am alumnus.
Hes not just a street-corner ward heeler, hes a philosopher, a deep thinker.
When youre elected, people elect you to make decisions. ... It will take all of us together to turn around the sistuation.
In the old days, when a eloquent statesman delivered the kind of barn-burner we all be expectin from da Mayah on Wednesday, sometimes the mesmerized delegates would suddenly stampede the podium, quickly making up signs demanding that he be added to the ticket. But Mumbles already has made one thing clear.
I will not be a candidation Ill seek but I will accept a draft.
Perhaps Mumbles can be pressed into service later, during prime time. Hes quite experienced at doing introductions Let me induce our senior senator.
Mumbles will be returning to Boston right after the speech, Im sure. Thursday is primary day, and he must be in the city to make sure the votes are turned out for Sal Lamattina and whoever else hes pushing.
And when the votes are all counted in Boston on Thursday night, he will be able to say, as he has said in the past:
I have did my duty.

Re: Howie.
My mother always said if you can’t say anything nice about somebody, don’t say anything at all.
Sorry, Mom, but here goes.
Look up “chutzpah” and you’ll see Howie’s picture in the definition.
Everything he says about Mumbles is spot on, and funny too.
But has Howie ever listened to a tape of his own pontifications? He cannot complete a thought, let alone the show’s telephone number. He’s the poster boy for Attention Deficit Disorder.
Howie is a loveable little fuzzball in his own right, but he cannot string together two thoughts while talking.
He is a great columnist, but Fumbles should not be criticizing Mumbles.
Considering that WRKO re-signed him in ‘07 and this year,
Howie—even with ADD—must still have something to offer.
Otherwise he’d be off the air or one some little 1,000
watt station nobody can find.
Want to find a new appreciation of the worth of Howie?
Tune in tomorrow and hear his fill in, McScreamer. Ugh. He may seem to not be able to string together two thoughts while talking but it could be worse. A LOT worse. But as Dennis Miller would say, of course that’s just my opinion—hey, I could be wrong. Or to paraphrase what Chuck Barris used to say on The Gong Show when a contestant got the gong, hey, I _like_ Howie. But then again, I like root canals...
Howie is a loveable little fuzzball in his own right, but he cannot string together two thoughts while talking.
OK, Howie may not be the most articulate, "silver-tongued" radio host going, but as a regular listener, I would not exactly go as far as you in making him out to be bordering on "duncehood!"
An for the most part, he is mostly Conservative and takes great pleasure is skewering the Lib Pols in Taxachussetts as well as throughout the country.
Hope he gets (and I think he will) a National syndicated show when his gig with WRKO is up in 2 years. PS: For a "local yokel" he manages to get many nationally recognized, notable guests to appear on his show.
agreed. I don’t know if he’d get a national gig or not; talk radio in general appeals to an aging demo, but then again the likes of Rush can earn big bucks. Maybe Howie can get some fill in gigs for some shows (in the past he’s gone on KFI in LA via ISDN). Suppose for example he signs with WTKK in 2 yrs; they could have him do 2 hours of national and 2 of local. Who knows.
I know this goes back over 20 years but I remember listening to Jerry Williams and it would delight me when I’d hear him fill in: “Good afternoon New England, this is Howie Carr of the Herald and I’m filling in for the Dean today.” Jerry was a legend but I preferred Howie—Jerry was good, Howie even better.
Kuhner working something out with Cooksey to get a slot on a Saturday to do a special program about HUSSEIN.
Special Tue. column ping. Yesterday’s 11 am Kuhner show was a rerun from Fri but that’s OK, as I had missed the original airing. I did tune in for part of chumpline with McScreamer but that was about it. I did a daytrip to Lake Sunapee NH.
OK:
Hey, Walsh: What a load
By Howie Carr | Tuesday, September 4, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists
So any male who folds towels is an honorary girl, or so says the corpulent chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, John Walsh.
I mean, Walsh said in between bites of a Krispy Kreme doughnut yesterday, he spent a couple million dollars folding towels on TV to prove hes an honorary girl. We appreciate that.
I fold all the kitchen towels in my house, Fatso. Does that make me an honorary girl too? By the way, have you ever watched the president of the United States throw a baseball? Talk about honorary girls ... .
While chowing down on a Twinkie later in the day, Walsh apologized. But mission accomplished. Walsh, who has the manly build of the Pillsbury Doughboy, had left the impression that Scott Brown somehow isnt the man Ted Kennedy was. Real men, you see, swim carefree away from their sinking Oldsmobile Delmonts while their secretaries gasp for breath as the water rises around their necks. Then theres Teds nephew Joe Kennedy another real man who flipped a Jeep on Nantucket and put a real girl named Pam Kelley in a wheelchair for life.
And then there was Michael Kennedy and his 15-year-old babysitter, and cousin Willie Smith with the blue-dot girl in Palm Beach ... .
Those Kennedys, theyre all manly men. Theyre Democrats.
Hows that war on women thing going for the Democrats this year? Elizabeth Warren tomorrow night at the convention will be introducing Bill Clinton, accused rapist and serial sexual predator, disbarred for perjury committed in a sexual-harassment civil case brought by an intern young enough to be his daughter.
Last Fourth of July, Granny had her photo taken on City Hall Plaza with Rep. Tony Henriquez (D-Dorchester), who a few days later was charged in two counties with assault and kidnap of his former girlfriend.
Another Democrats Democrat, that Tony Henriquez. A proper successor in the General Court to ex-Sen. Jim Marzilli (D-Arlington), who always treated women, especially immigrant women, with the utmost respect as he asked them, Do you want it?
Asked about the charges against Henriquez, Gov. Deval Patrick said they were troubling. Not shocking, or appalling, or outrageous. Troubling.
The Democrats respect women, dont you know? But Scott Brown folds laundry, so hes a sissy? Over the weekend, the fake Indian told somebody at the Globe, You probably wont see me folding laundry.
Of course not, shes a one-percenter. One percenters never fold their own laundry. Its beneath them. But you will see Granny smooching an accused rapist tomorrow night.
Troubling, dont you think?

>>I asked him to comment on the accuracy of a recent Free Republic article by Howie Carr, a conservative Boston radio talk-show host who contributes columns to the Boston Herald. Carr wrote that sources told him the author of the editorial is Globe columnist and Pulitzer winner Joan Vennochi. His story also said Vennochi was suspended for two weeks.
(The Globe’s) Canellos declined to identify the author or detail the punishment, if any.
[for the record the article was on Howie’s email list. I posted it on FR. He told listeners Venocchi was the culprit, according to his sources, and advised listeners to check out the article on his email list or “get your friends on the list to forward it to you”)-—RR]
>>Vennochi did not respond to a phone message left earlier this week. Her most recent column was published August 23, according to her online archive, and she hasnt tweeted since August 20. If she is the writer and her column disappears for a reported two weeks, shouldnt Globe readers be told why? Shouldnt they also be made aware that the paper is holding someone accountable for a breach of its policies?
LOL! A FReeper -- I forget who -- commented when that picture came out that Obama gives "throwing like a girl" a bad name! ;-)
on Kennedy’s blog:
http://dankennedy.net/2012/09/04/poynter-weighs-in-on-globes-lifted-editorial/
>>As I wrote on Aug. 24, the editors note raised as many questions as it answered, since it did not reveal the identity of the person who wrote it or whether he or she had been disciplined.
Last week, as you may have heard, Boston Herald columnist and WRKO Radio (AM 680) talk-show host Howie Carr sent a dispatch to subscribers to his email list claiming he had learned the culprit was Globe columnist Joan Vennochi, and that she had been suspended for two weeks. The email ended up being posted to the Free Republic, a right-wing website.
Oddly, though, that information has not appeared in the Herald, which instead ran a story on the Globes decision not to name names.
Kennedy continues:
>>It strikes me that this would have been a one-day story if the Globe had simply announced who did it, whether that person had been disciplined and, if so, what the punishment was. The borrowing from Domkes piece looks to me more like extreme sloppiness than classic plagiarism. And yes, I understand that such matters are confidential at most companies. But if this had been a signed column rather than an anonymous editorial, naming person would have been unavoidable. I dont see why it should be handled differently simply because the piece did not carry a byline.
The press doesn't seem to hold themselves to the same standard of responsibility they hold others to... well, hold conservatives to... something like that. And while we're talking - what's with the Poynter Institute? They're commenting on a lack of openness while they own a newspaper that does NOT HAVE ONE CONSERVATIVE on staff? And there's NEVER a mention of that fact? Anywhere - ever?
I don’t know if he’s technically a staff member but they do have Jeff Jacoby as token conservative I think though
Jacoby entry in Wikipedia
>>Jeff Jacoby’s column has been published on the op-ed page of the Boston Globe since 1994. From 1987 to 1994, he was chief editorial writer for the Boston Herald. Within months of his debut at the Globe, he was described by the left-leaning Boston Phoenix as “the region’s pre-eminent spokesman for Conservative Nation,” and a columnist who had “quickly established himself as a must-read.”
So I don’t know if he’s technically on staff but they do
have a column by him...Otherwise...
oops! Disregard post 14...I’m just about to head out for lunch and didn’t see you were referring to the POYNTER institute not the Globe! Oh well, oopsie.
Jeff Jacoby’s wonderful.... I assume people know the Poynter Institute owns the former St. Petersburg Times - now known as the Tampa Bay Times... I should have been clearer. My bad.
His last few oratorical outings have actually been somewhat semi-coherent. Maybe he joined Toastmasters or got a coach who can understand and work with him.
Fauxcahontas is the final test for mind of the masshole voter. Can't wait to see what they do. In other news, OJ Innocent, BHO elected.
Note article... "he was turning his life around, he had a rap music contract..."
>>ONTARIO (CA) - A tweet may have provided details to the reasons for a one-car crash that killed five young men on Sunday.
"Drunk (expletive) going 120 drifting corners," was posted at 1:19 a.m. Sunday on the Twitter account belonging to @ink2flashyy.
The post ended with the acronym Y.O.L.O., which means "You Only Live Once."
The account belonged to Ervin McKinness, 21, of Ontario. He was one of the five men killed in the crash about 1:40 a.m. Monday at Creekside Drive and Haven Avenue.
Marquell Bogan, 23, and Dylan George, 20, both of Ontario; Jonathan Watson, 21, of San Bernardino, and JaJuan Bennett, 23, of Rancho Cucamonga also were killed when their a 2005 Nissan Sentra traveling southbound on Haven ran a red light, lost control and slammed into a wall.
McKinness, who had aspirations to be a rapper, had either been signed or was about to sign with a major label, according to friends.
"He was trying to go out in the music business and he was getting there," McInness' cousin Keith Conner said.
"He was up there. He already had a couple of songs and then this stuff happened."
Google Oscar Wilde Little Neil one must have a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell without dissolving into tears . . . of laughter.
To paraphrase Joe Walsh’s Life’s Been Good to Me So Far:
My souped up car goes one twenty five
I lost my life, (expletive), now I can’t drive.
(not that the aspiring young rapper would have been familiar with the tune)
