I’m ashamed to acknowledge that I know what you’re talking about... though I stopped reading the series after a while when it became increasingly divergent.
I plan to read it all, eventually, but either through buying in second-hand shops or taking them from library discards, which is where I found it in the first place. Can’t wait for Tarmon Gai’don.
