'Mysterious' Baltic Sea Object Is a Glacial Deposit

A feature on the floor of the Baltic Sea that was discovered last summer by Swedish treasure hunters is making headlines once again. The latest media coverage draws upon an hour-long radio interview with Peter Lindberg, head of the Ocean X Team (which made the "discovery"), in which Lindberg delivers a string of cryptic and titillating statements about the "strange" and "mysterious" seafloor object his team has been exploring for a year.

Lindberg discusses various possibilities for what the object might be: "It has these very strange stair formations, and if it is constructed, it must be constructed tens of thousands of years ago before the Ice Age," he said in the radio interview. (The peak of the most recent Ice Age occurred some 20,000 years ago.)

"If this is Atlantis, that would be quite amazing," he said. ..

Lindberg acknowledges that the object could instead be a natural formation, such as a meteorite that penetrated the ice during the Ice Age, or an underwater volcano; however, he gives the impression that scientists are baffled by it. ..

Also adding titillation, Lindberg says a documentary is being made about the seafloor anomaly — the location of which he has not disclosed — and he's saving some juicy details for the footage. "We're not telling everything," he said. "We will reveal some quite interesting things in the documentary."

The divers recently gave samples of stone from the object to Volker Brüchert, an associate professor of geology at Stockholm University. Swedish tabloids quote Brüchert as saying: "I was surprised when I researched the material I found a great black stone that could be a volcanic rock. My hypothesis is that this object, this structure was formed during the Ice Age many thousands of years ago."

The "question" was mainly rhetorical. Clarke's creatures had a lot of evolving to do to get to Neanderthal status btw. My point, of course, is that the more advanced society becomes technologically and in many other ways, it seems to cling to magic and the extra-normal to explain simple and logical phenomena.

JRandom's comment about witches captured the idea well. Deep down in all of us is a terrified primitive creature hoping there really is a Wizard behind that curtain or a celestial apparition that will relieve us of the fear and reality of being merely human.

The object has a lava-like appearance and also that of a large pipe and a hugh cap on top.. the slots and ‘gouged’ more like grooved areas do have a manufactured look.. or it could be a gateway to Hell. :-}

If I recall correctly, at one point, a court in France ruled in a lawsuit against locusts. The locusts did not recognize the court's jurisdiction. Crazy stuff, and some of it still happens.

The closest thing to an answer that I could quickly find was a remark in space.com saying it was from a site where the rover "Sprit spent the closing months of 2007" ( sic ) so I consulted the Mars Rover Spirit: Traverse Map Archive and found that this was sometime just before sol ( Martian day ) 1406 of the mission. Then I worked backward from this date in the Spirit Raw Image archive for the panorama camera, and found that the image ( included below - "figure" is bottom left ) was taken on sol 1367. There of several of these taken through color filters to make the color images. Note you can see the bottom edge of this raw image in the posted color panorama image, as indicated by a slight change of tone. The portion below it is from sol 1368, and these are really much more interesting.

I think it's pretty easy to see that the "figure" is just the fractured face of a sculpted rock, the top of which blends into the background. It does not resemble a statuette, as it might appear to.
