MO Poll: Akin, Not Romney Hurt by 'Legitimate Rape' Remarks
Breitbart.com ^ | 26 Aug 2012 | Tony Lee

A new Missouri poll indicates Rep. Todd Akin’s rape remarks have not hurt Mitt Romney in Missouri, but the comments about “legitimate rape” and the controversy that ensued have damaged Akin, especially among women voters.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch poll found Akin, who had been leading McCaskill by five points and was tied with the Democrat among women voters before his remarks, now trails McCaskill by 9 points overall and by 18 points with women voters.

Democrats have tried to tie Akin’s comments to Romney, but the poll found Romney still leads President Barack Obama in Missouri by 7 points, 50-43.

These numbers come out after Akin vowed to stay in the race at a press conference on Friday. The deadline for Akin to withdraw was last Tuesday. Akin had until September 25 to petition for a court order to remove his name off the ballot, which would allow the Missouri GOP to select a replacement candidate. Akin's is a race Republicans must win to get control of the Senate and, until now, was assumed to be a shoo-in. McCaskill is still viewed more unfavorably than she is favorably in the poll.

What more do Missourians ( especially those who changed their minds because of this gaffe ) want?

I cannot tell you what goes on in the minds of Missouri voters, but I don't think this is simply a matter of correcting a gaffe. I think it's about the type of person who would make such an outrageous gaffe to begin with. And on top of that, Akin did himself no favors with his 'retraction'. He appeared weak and unsure of himself.

The bottom line here is that it doesn't matter what you or I think. What matters is what the voters of Missouri think. And right now, the majority of Missouri voters have a negative opinion of Akin. This race has gone from a +10 for a generic Republican candidate to a -10 for Akin. From a practical standpoint, I think we are much better off with a generic Republican. The stakes in this election are simply too high. This is a 'must win' seat as is North Dakota and Massachusetts. With Akin continuing in this race, we could lose all three.

It doesn’t mean anything. This is about the life of a child.

maybe we have it all wrong.

Akin should come out swinging and embrace the magic uterus. He can rebrand his campaign as the “MAGIC UTERUS CRUSADE”.
He can get his Uncle Chippie to be the campaign manager, MLizzie can be his speechwriter . They can call all those who disagree as baby killer abortionists.
They can lead a barefoot march on Jefferson City and debate McCaskil on rape and conception.
And when they lose with only 2% of the vote they can blame them RINOS and party bosses.

I agree with what you say in Post 61. But Akin ain’t goin’. And there in is the crux of the situation. He’s “our guy.” Like it or now. Most don’t, now. But they better vote for him or it’s 6 more yrs. of Ma...

Well, that tells me what the majority of Missouri voters are like right there. Now if Conservative Missourians don’t pull the lever for Akin because of this gaffe, I am not going to weep for them when they cry later about how their freedoms are being taken away. YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELVES.

There are NOT enough 'conservatives' male and female in Missouri, to beat the combined votes of liberals and those so called 'moderates' or 'independents'. Missouri is a 'swing' state.... This is alllll Akin's fault, because many of us have had to struggle to 'survive' a long drought and a blasting heat. And discussing what constitutes 'legitimate' rape was NOT on the majorities radar.

I'm not the slightest bit interested in making Akin a martyr and giving the election to crazy like a fox, commie, Claire. But if he is on the ballot I will vote for him.

Akin needs 'life', politically speaking, and that means cash... Quit bashing 'legitimate' Missouri conservatives and put your money where your insults are.

So I’ll leave it up to folks to decide which of us they feel will enjoy having McCaskill win. My thought (or at least my hope) is that both of us will be saddened. I KNOW that I will be saddened

Hey I'm with the majority of Republicans and Independents in Missouri who want Akin replaced.

The only group who do not want Akin replaced are democrats in Missouri.

Notice what HuckleberryHound is attempting to perform.... I no longer believe that Akin or his national cheerleaders care if Akin wins.

I am a conservative Missouri voter and you have our situation pegged as I see it. I don’t like it that we have to do everything we can to get Akin out, but if we want to WIN that is the situation.

Being a conservative Southern Baptist, I also resent Huckabee and Akin using Southern Baptist ministers to dig in on their position. Insinuating that I am un-Christian and pro-abortion because I want Akin out is not going to change my views.

The fact is that we cannot win on Republican votes alone. If Akin stays in, he loses.

Apparently, you missed the word *IF* in my above remark.

And there in is the crux of the situation. He’s “our guy.”

He may indeed be our guy, but he is not "the guy" of independent voters. And it is these voters that are going to decide the election. They don't keep up with politics like we do. All they know is that there are two choices on that ballot. And when they see Akin's name, they will know who he is. And they will subsequently vote for the other person.

The bottom line is that we need a new guy. So the only hope I see is to get Akin to change his mind. And the only way I see for that to happen is to convince his self-serving elitist ego that it is going to go down in defeat.

I serve at the prospect of defeating Claire McCaskil.

Now who do you serve, blueunicorn6, Todd Akin's ego?

I did not miss your *IF*, because it is immaterial. Akin needs those Frank Luntz moderate so called independents to win. Old Claire has spent the past year + hunting for some tall grass to hide her Obama connections. We had a drought and blasting heat, thus Clair was politically 'naked' and Akin handed her a mink coat.

Well, good luck with that! Akin's PCA. They wrote the book on how to be stubborn. Obstinate.

Sept.25 may be the last day Akin has to petition the court to remove his name from the ballot, legally speaking. But technically speaking it is also the day MO Absentee ballots begin shipping. And three days prior the overseas military ballots begin shipping. The reality is Akin probably has until the 15th-18th to decide. And he knows that. But he ain't goin' nowhere.

Many independents are Libertarians. A vote for anyone but Akin is a vote for Ma...
