Missouri conservatives rally to Akin, blast Republican “establishment”
Reuters ^ | August 24, 2012 | Nick Carey

(Reuters) – Missouri conservatives say they are rallying around U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin despite his controversial comments about rape because they are outraged that “establishment” Republican Party leaders tried to railroad him out of the race.

A backlash has set in here in Akin’s suburban St. Louis congressional district, where supporters said the national party had no right to attempt to force out a duly-elected candidate.

To me he's saying that pregnancies from an actual reported and documented rape are rare due to the fact that there are uncontrollable physiological responses that may, and usually do, prevent a woman who has actually been raped from carrying the child for a sufficient period of time to even need an abortion.

Well, if "uncontrollable physiological responses ... may, and usually do, prevent a woman who has actually been raped from carrying the child" then you are also saying that pregnancy from rape is a general physical impossibility. Should I have said "improbability?" Maybe. Either way, you are wrong. There is no research to support this notion.

Do most rape victims get pregnant? No. Nobody said they do. Most acts of intercourse, even by couples who are trying to conceive, don't result in pregnancy. The women "usually" don't get pregnant. By that standard, all pregnancies are "rare." But Akin suggested that pregnancy from rape is uniquely improbable.

And he was wrong. More importantly, nobody asked him about that, and it has nothing to do with whether those children should live or die. When you go off on tangents, and talk about things you don't understand, it's easy to get yourself in trouble.

And for what? What grand principle was he defending? That rape victims don't usually get pregnant? Is that where we're planting our flag? What policy does that translate to? How does that belief improve the country? How does it advance the pro-life cause?

If you want to talk RTL that's an issue. If you want to talk RAPE, that's a different issue ~ to your audience if not yourself.

Well that's the biggest problem when trying to derive the truth: realizing that most people don't want to hear it.

Brunner led Akin 40-20 on June 25th, 2 days before the $1.5 million ad onslaught by Dems touting the Huckabee endorsement and citing that Akin was "too conservative", etc, hit the airwaves. My choice was Steelman, and she can't run now, so I have no dog in this hunt. But again, facts are facts, Akin owes his victory to Harry Reid's machinations.

Wow,I think this post pretty much says it all.!!!

I hope that the three of you don’t think that I (or any of the other males on this forum) were intentionally being insensitive or desired any female who has dealt with rape or abortion to ‘feel bad’.

IMHO, ABORTION should not even be a POLITICAL issue. That it is, is what leads to the mess we are in.

Besides, after Dec. 21, 2012, we will be under Communist rule, and no one will have a say one way or the other.

So... you are saying he wasn't wrong, it's just the words he used ?.

I am saying he is not wrong about abortion. He is wrong about the likelihood of rape resulting in pregnancy, and wrong to even talk about it. He was not asked about it, and it is not in any way relevant - he opened himself up to the ridicule he is receiving. It's nobody's fault but his own.

However, do you have any proof that the womb DOES NOT TRY to shut down an unwanted pregnancy ?

There's no evidence to support what Akin said. I don't need to prove the negative - he's the one who made the claim. Again - entirely gratuitously.

So, where do you stand on the use of modern toilet paper?
There are many aspects to that issue besides the ones you've mentioned but I'll address those you've proffered in a moment.
White or pastels? I choose white as the dyes seem to be problematic.
Two ply, not one.
It doesn't have to be recycled or perfumed, I'm wiping my )@( after all and it's quickly being flushed.
That's enough on that.

Should be more of it, less of it, or it’s about right?
If your )@( is wide you'll probably need more of it.
If you've got a narrow )@( you'll probably need less.

I don't think we should be forced to use one square like Sheryl Crow proposed yet if we did I wouldn't throw away the thrown off corner.
I have to deal with enough s||t already.

My goodness, you are getting touchy aren’t you? Your posts tell a story for all to read and understand if they are so inclined to make that effort.

Let’s all have a great conservative Republican victory across the country this November. And that includes state/local elections, the US House, the US Senate and the Presidency. It’s almost within our grasp!

Right now the polls reflect people wanting him to drop out, which is a different thing than how they would vote if he is their only choice against McCaskill.

Very true. But he needs a lot of coaching the rest of the way. From this point on, it isn't about rape or abortion, it's about "what nutty thing will that crank say in his next interview?"

Every question, every answer will get heightened scrutiny right now. If he can handle them well, the added attention could work in his favor, but he no longer has a margin for error.

...the CRIMINALS who run ABORTION CLINICS make major payoffs to politicians. GOTTA KEEP THAT MONEY ROLLING IN. That is one of the reasons these CLINICS perform ABORTIONS...

Pardon me, but they're not "clinics", and the abortion killings committed in them are not "performed".

Cordially,

...then you are also saying that pregnancy from rape is a general physical impossibility.
If I had wanted to say that I would have. I didn't so don't make my words into something they're not.
Besides, I have no idea whatsoever what you meant by "general physical impossibility".

Should I have said "improbability?" Maybe.
I don't think it would matter what you use. You don't seem to have understood what the man was trying to say anyway.

Either way, you are wrong.
Wrong about what?
There is no research to support this notion.
To support what notion?

But Akin suggested that pregnancy from rape is uniquely improbable.
My how nuanced your words are. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

And he was wrong.
Again, thanks for sharing your opinion.

I'll presume that the rest of your questions are rhetorical. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

How about you? Have you got some exit polls that show the ads actually influenced the voters to give some "weight" to the supposition?

Well you're free to insinuate that all you want. I'll not stop you.

Your posts tell a story for all to read and understand if they are so inclined to make that effort.
Well why don't you just go ahead and tell the story that you've concocted in your own mind as your replies indicate that you're just dying to do so.

Following Akin’s lead on emphasis, Obama claims his faith in Jesus is “legitimate” and real.

I guess if Akin argued about “Rape where Legitimate and Real”, his point would not have been subject to ridicule, outrage, and scorn.

I wonder if Obama has Faith in Christ notwithstanding the dubious reference to a man in history identified as Jesus.
