Missourians recanting; Todd Akin just might win. (Vanity)
August 25, 2012 | pistolpackinpapa

One of my Missouri friends called me back last evening and he has recanted. He is still pissed at Akin but, he's going to vote for him because he can't stand McCaskill. The surprising part was this: He said that everybody he has talked to, about this, within the past couple of days, feels just like he does. Akin may be semi-brain dead, but they cannot and will NOT vote for McCaskill. There are 73 days before Election Day (counting today). I have a feeling than when a lot of people, who are angry at Akin now, walk into that voting booth, they just will NOT be able to vote for McCaskill and will pull the lever for Akin. If I lived in Missouri, that would be me.

I've got a feeling cooler heads will prevail over the next 73 Days and a lot of people will swing back to Akin, simply out of hatred for her thighness. The first poll that shows the race tied or Akin one point ahead; it's gonna be on. Man, if Akin dude does pull out a win that would be the shock heard 'round the world and Claire McCaskill would have to be put on suicide watch.

The St. Louis Dispatch reported this:

The Post Dispatch is the voice of the Democrat Party in St Louis. If they want McCaskill to be reelected then why do they want Akin to leave the race???

Is it possible that the Democrats already have their next commercial ready to run if he were to have resigned attacking any Akin replacement as the selective stooge of the GOP party bosses overturning a valid primary election???

Wake up --

I am from Missouri and many of us think Akin is a Huckabee puppet. Send Akin down to Arkansas and let him serve their State. We don’t want him.

So you’re voting for McCaskill? (I really don’t expect you to answer that question.)

Waiting for Akins to drop out or a 3rd party sponsored by Palin.

Akins is Huckabee’s current pawn for revenge, pay-back and power brokering at the GOP Convention IMHO . Akins will be gone once Huck gets what he wants next week..

FrIday’s Akin presser was just Huckabee turning up the heat in Tampa for the weekend.

Akin would need some heavy-weights the calibre of Sarah Palin (If she’s gotten over her fierce anger toward him.), to travel the state with him and remind the folks at every stop: “Todd Akin misspoke; he acknowledged his mistake and apologized. Now, who do you want voting for you in the Senate; Akin or McCaskill?” But, that will NEVER happen. He is too toxic right now. Huckabee has gone to bat for him, but he doesn’t hold an elective office and have to face the voters. So, Akin is broke and all alone. I don’t think any politician would touch him with a 10 foot pole.

It won't happen. Unless you didn't notice, Palin's endorsement doesn't carry much weight in Missouri. It didn't for Steelman and that is why Sarah was angry in her interview. She needs to get over it and quit being a sore loser.

Akins is Huckabee’s current pawn for revenge, pay-back and power brokering at the GOP Convention IMHO

If your IMHO is correct, then would you rather have a "Huckabee pawn" or an Obama pawn in the Senate???

The question I asked yesterday still stands. And what I posted this morning still stands. What does one have to do with the other. Thank God that outside of MO, only us political junkies have even heard of Todd Aikin. If it was our Presidential nominee (which Santorum could have been)it would be an ever bigger catastrophe. Akin has caused his Party and his State much grief in the past 8 days. But, his gaffe can be more easily maintained in MO than if he was a “national” candidate as Santorum would have been. And he could pull it out......it’s a long shot, but he could.

Not a single person I know has changed their mind about Akin.

Well somebody has. There has been a 20 point swing in the polls. It went from Akin up by 11 to down by 9 now. Somebody changed their mind.

While that is no doubt true, it is time to accept that while what he said was idiotic, he isn’t going away, he’s less of one than McCaskill, and it’s time to close ranks and get the guy elected.

Of course they are, and they want Akin to stay in the race. They are reporting that Independents want him out and that Independents now will vote for McCaskill. See the difference? Akin is a decent guy and a great conservative, but he can't overcome this dynamic. The fact that you can't see what's staring you straight in the face doesn't change reality.

I know; the double standard is mind-boggling. But, the Dems applaud and reward immorality and stupidity.

it’s time to close ranks and get the guy elected.

That's a good plan except for one thing: it won't work. The problem is not conservatives, the problem is the independent, moderate, clueless vote. And, they will not vote for Akin although they previously supported him. They have left and won't come back. So, that means that McCaskill gets many, although not all, of their votes. That will be enough for her to win.

All of that could turn around overnight if Akin were to withdraw and the Republicans were to replace him with another solid conservative, pro life candidate. There was a highly contested election for the nomination with several solid conservative choices. Akin came out on top in large measure because of the large sum of money McCaskill spent convincing Missouri voters that he was the most conservative of them all. He wasn't, but her message got him elected. His stupidity has made him unelectable. Good guy, good conservative, but he cannot win. It's that simple.

Mason-Dixon MO poll: Romney up 50/43 over Obama

When National Journal buries a lead, man, they really bury it. A new poll from Mason-Dixon in Missouri of 625 likely voters shows what everyone already suspected — that Todd Akin had blown a five-point lead in Missouri’s US Senate race and now trails by nine, 50/41 [see update], to Claire McCaskill. But what many didn’t expect was that the crash-and-burn of Akin would not damage Mitt Romney at all. In the 9th paragraph out of ten, we find out that Romney leads Barack Obama in the critical swing state, and it’s not all that close:

McCaskill’s lead is a testament to the damage caused by Akin’s remarks. She remains less-than-popular, as slightly more voters view her unfavorably (41 percent) than favorably (39 percent). And, despite worries that Akin’s remarks could also harm the candidacy of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor leads President Obama, 50 percent to 43 percent. Obama’s favorable-unfavorable split of 38 percent-48 percent is worse than McCaskill’s.

As far as the US Senate race, it’s amazing that Akin’s still within nine points — a testament to the weakness of McCaskill. On the question of whether Akin should withdraw, a slim plurality of McCaskill voters say he shouldn’t (44/40) … but a majority of Akin’s self-described voters think he should, 50/34. Independents think he should withdraw by thirty-two points, 57/25, but 35% of them will still vote for Akin. His favorables are at -39, 17/56, and yet he’s still getting 41% of the vote. Like I said … amazing.

The election is in November. Akin needs to go after McCaskill's voting record. She voted for Obamacare and does not want it repealed. In a referendum--not a poll--71% of Missouri voters wanted no part of Obamacare. Will the voters reelect McCaskill to keep Obamacare in place or choose Akin, the guy who will vote to repeal it? And then there are other real issues like the economy, the debt and deficit, unemployment, etc.

We will see with time whether Missouri voters consider a verbal gaffe, which has no effect on their personal lives and interests, is more important than the actual record of McCaskill who supports Obama's policies that are inimical to their personal interests. A month from now, reality may sink in, the current media hysteria not withstanding.

Hopefully, someone will ask Romney on the campaign trail whether he would prefer McCaskill or Akin in the senate to support his policies.

I believe Akin when he says he is not getting out.

Mason-Dixon MO poll: Romney up 50/43 over Obama

When the voters go into the voting booths, it will come down to “Who do I hate the most; Akin or McCaskill”? Another “silver lining” for Akin (and Pubbie candidates nationwide) is that Dem voter enthusiasm is way down. If they vote for Obama, they’ll vote for McCaskill, but, I think the turn-out on the Dem side, especially in the Black communities, will be surprisingly low.
