As the controversy over Republican Senate candidate Todd Akins legitimate rape comment continues, Mitt Romneys lead in Missouri has vanished.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Missouri Voters finds President Obama with 47% support to Romneys 46%. Three percent (3%) favor some other candidate in the race, and three percent (3%) more are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

If we lose the Senate and Harry Reid keeps his power appealing ObamaCare is out the window and it’s out there for good.
If in fact Akin does petition court, and Carnahan does not unnecessarily delay her (and others) decision the state central cmte. of the MO Republican Party would have 28 days or until Oct. 12 (whichever comes first) to name a replacement. But Carnahan/Dems could conceivably drag this out. Prolong the agony. She is not standing for re election so public opinion matters little to her.
This to you and every one else that keeps telling the world what an idoit Akin is, and how he needs to go.
As of right now, he’s not getting out, like it or not. In fact, the more people howl for him to get out, the more he digs his heels in. As it stands right now, the GOPe, national organizations like the NRSC and Crossroads, and such have abandoned the state of Missouri; leaving Missouri Conservatives with a damaged candidate, and no help what so ever. In fact, what people outside the state keep doing is dragging Akin through the mud, giving McCaskill even more help.
McCaskill is deflatable, even by an oh so damaged Akin. Yes, she is that bad and disliked in the state. It’s an up hill battle, and it looks like Missouri voters are going to have do with Akin and by ourselves. So I ask this of everyone on FR, who is not from Missouri.
Shut up and quit carping about it, making it worse for us. No amount of your punditry is going to change things. Things are taking place behind the scenes to get him to leave the race; I am sure. We have until Sept. 25th for him to legally drop out; although I think Sept. 11th is a more likely date they are shooting for. That’s when discounted TV spots expire, and the price for TV time goes up dramatically, if what the news says is true. All the complaining does is give the Libs fodder, keeps the issue fresh on people’s minds, and works on our nerves.
You want to help us, remind anyone you meet that has an opinion about it that Akin may have some something incredibly dumb; he’s still head and shoulders better than McCaskill is on her best day, though.
Full disclosure, I voted for John Brunner, and am not an Akin fan; even before his little gaffe. Since he is the candidate, for now, I am going to support him and work my hardest to help him defeat McCaskill. It’s that important.
re: Akin can still get off the ballot, but he can’t be replaced

Someone is staying after school for not paying attention. If he withdraws and gets a court order by Sept 25, the 68-member Republican Central Committee in Missouri will name his successor. McCasKILL will be running against someone who will actually beat her.
Well yeah... why would the democrats be attacking the very man they paid so much to be where he's at today?
Steelman, Brunner, or Wagner.
That is exactly my point. If this is done quickly, Carnahan cannot play games and drag this out - there will be too much statewide and national attention put on her.
She will be publicly reminded that her own dead father was illegally elected.
Akin needs to go today, but I will settle for the opening day of the Democratic Convention as an alternative, since they are making the entire show about him.
His supporters here believe in that magic spemacide, that’s why they think he should continue, and while I used to like Huck, I think he also believes it.
He can’t save babies if he doesn’t get elected. Others, who are equally pro-life, can beat McCasKILL and continue the fight. Why do people think he is the only one who can fight the battle?
He said what he meant and he meant what he said . A morons a morn one hundred percent.
And I am sure he and his minions still believ in the magic spemacide and that pregnant rape victims are liars.
If there is another poll or two next week that shows Akin down 10+ to McCaskill, i.e., regressing rather than making progress, I am HOPING that may finally get through to Akin.
This is NOT about some RINO "GOP-e" conspiracy against a pro-life social conservative. It's about not losing the election(s) because of one foot-in-mouth-disease candidate who gives the Dems exactly the ammo they want. There are several conservative, pro-life candidates here in Missouri who could take Akin's place quickly and mount a winning campaign against McCaskill--and take the ammo away from the Democrats nationally.
I voted for Akin. He is my congressman. I agree with his political views. But he is hurting the cause.
They Re flakes ready to commit mass suicide for the cause.
What this means to me is that even with Akin gaffe 24/7, Obama can only muster a one-point lead. That will fade by November.
I’d still like to see Akin out but I don’t think this means Obama is going to win Missouri. It would be just as terrible, though, if the GOP can’t take back the Senate because Akin blew our chance.
But "pressure" to date has not brought Akin down. Robin Carnahan HATES Republicans. She has never played well with them. Any "pressure" brought on her will be like water off a ducks back. Then again, maybe she'll surprise me (us) ?
Ditto, Charles. He needs to be gone before the RAT convention to at least lessen this issue they are pushing.
Exactly. You can put in a QB who had lofty college stats, but if he throws a pick-six at critical moments in pivotal games, it becomes clear he's not your guy.
Akin is definitely hurting the cause, but he's unconcerned about the consequences. He thinks God wants him there.
With all due respect, the question at this point is how politically stupid are you? Seriously. I'm looking back through posts and see you've been defending Akin. You appear to be wearing political blinders and are completely unaware of how damaging this would be our electoral chances in Missouri. Now you ask how stupid the voters are when most people have been posting from the beginning that the Akin situation would play out exactly this way. This is precisely why conservatives who live in reality recognized right away that Akin needs to get out.
If Missouri voters would rather vote for Obama and all of his policies that have left this nation in shambles economically, i.e., inimical to their own personal interests and lives, because of a verbal gaffe of a GOP senate candidate, then Missouri and the country deserve the government they get.
This sort of blather doesn't help us. Crying that if the voters don't react to the Akin controversy the way you want that Missouri and the country deserve more bad governance is a stupid reaction. It's like saying "We should defend this Akin person and screw the country if they don't agree with me".
This Senate seat is more important than any one person. Period. What is it about this truth that don't you get? Akin is not doing the pro-life cause any favors staying in and losing. There are plenty of good, conservative, equally pro-life folks that could step in and beat Claire McCaskill and take this seat for the good guys. There is no loyalty when it comes to winning elections. It is much like professional sports. If an NFL QB, RB, etc, is injured and can't win, or has said something stupid and is hurting the team, etc, you either fire or bench that person. Doesn't matter if its fair. Akin is hurting the team and needs to put his ego aside and make room for someone that will not hurt the team.
