Missouri conservatives rally to Akin, blast Republican "establishment"

ST CHARLES, Missouri (Reuters) - Missouri conservatives say they are rallying around U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin despite his controversial comments about rape because they are outraged that "establishment" Republican Party leaders tried to railroad him out of the race.

A backlash has set in here in Akin's suburban St. Louis congressional district, where supporters said the national party had no right to attempt to force out a duly-elected candidate.

Backers described Akin as the "real deal," a politician fiercely committed to their social causes such as opposition to abortion, and to the Tea Party drive to downsize government.

Wow.... that’s a real STREEEETTTCCCHHHHH.

No the real stretch are people like you who think denial is a river in Egypt.

How come you can't admit that Todd Akin messed up bad, he has had an 18 point swing since he opened up his mouth, and has now lost a very winnable seat.

The real stretch is from people like you, who can't see the facts or hold any responsibilty to Todd Akin for his massive blunder.

Why would the party...or any of us for that matter, back someone who’s demonstrated that they’re dumber than a hoe handle?

It is coming from the national media telling the voter so much mis information.

The blame doesn't matter. Winning the election matters.

People are being played though it's extremely difficult to reach people on this.

I agree completely, but again it doesn't matter. The only person who needs to be reached is Todd Akin.

You cannot pull him off like that

As far as I know, no one can force Akin to quit. They can only ask him to do the right thing. Doing the right thing means doing what it takes to maximize our chances of electing a Republican senator in Missouri.

It is not too late to turn this around if people would just calm down.

Akin now has a 47% "highly unfavorable" rating. That is simply terrible. It would be much, much, much easier to turn this around with a different candidate. McCaskill's campaign ad writers now have so much solid material to use against Akin that they don't even have to be creative. They can replay Akin's actual words, and replay his embarrassingly botched attempts to apologize, they can show doctors disagreeing with Akin's bizarre medical opinions on rape, and they can play quote after quote from extremely prominent Republicans and conservatives asking Akin to quit. After they are through with Akin there won't be anything left.

A different Republican candidate will not have these problems.

Hossehockey!

Control of the Senate and winning concerns the entire country.

You idiots in Missouri voted for a mental midget, now take your medicine like good little boys and girls.

Man, it scares me that gaining control of the senate depends on these short-sighted fools.

>> Akin himself has made it into a crazy disaster.

Indeed he has. But I think the GOP mishandled this as well.

The GOP lacks the ability of damage control. A gag order on Akin and every Republican pundit, politician, and personality should have been issued right away to permit time for a “fix”.

It was a disaster alright, but also with reckless hysteria bellowing from the panicking members on the Right.

You are just so clever! "denial is a river in Egypt"... LOL. Your "team" has just lost the conservative vote. Something they were trying to solidify. Their vitriol aimed at a good solid "conservative" man in a State race...that is up to the STATE voters... has been over the top and downright insulting to someone with his conservative record. Methinks that this attack by the Mittbots is PRECISELY because of Akin's conservative record. Mitt cannot countenance having to work with THIS man should he become POTUS.

Now the King is choosing his court.

I was almost fooled by this crap... but no way is my vote going to Mitt who hopes to be King Romney.

Why doncha y'all keep posting encouraging words to get the rest of us off the fence to tell you HELL NO.

That of course is something you’re ensuring.

Can you suggest a realistic plan to fix the mess? With emphasis on “realistic”.

Elmer Gantry is the nation’s biggest fraud, charlatan, grifter, and con-man.

The Huckster sticking up for Akin isn’t surprising in the least.

Who the hell cares what that no good two-bit crook Huckabee says>

Still in denial or showing your true liberal colors.

Akin has lost the Missouri seat and McCaskill will win and all because you can't face up to the fact that Akin destroyed himself, and that fact is unacceptable to you.

Oh yeah I'm the liberal for pointing out that Todd Akin has lost 18 points to the liberal Clair McCaskill, when he opened up his mouth.

Oh yeah I'm the liberal because I can't see your fantasy that your Saint Todd Akin didn't do this.
