ST CHARLES, Missouri (Reuters) - Missouri conservatives say they are rallying around U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin despite his controversial comments about rape because they are outraged that "establishment" Republican Party leaders tried to railroad him out of the race.
A backlash has set in here in Akin's suburban St. Louis congressional district, where supporters said the national party had no right to attempt to force out a duly-elected candidate.
Backers described Akin as the "real deal," a politician fiercely committed to their social causes such as opposition to abortion, and to the Tea Party drive to downsize government.

and to get rid of a pro-life candidate for the Senate...
If they really were concerned that Akin would destroy the pto-life movement they would demand that the pro-abortion Willard stand down ...
Until they do they are just blowing smoke...
Todd Akin has done more to bolster the DNC in one flaming stupid moment than Obama or Biden has been able to do for themselves in the last month.
The McCaskill campaign spent $2 million to make sure Akin was the nominee by ‘attacking’ him for being such a great conservative.
It paid off ...

What a difference one TV interview can make. Embattled Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has now jumped to a 10-point lead over her Republican challenger, Congressman Todd Akin, in Missouris U.S. Senate race. Most Missouri Republicans want Akin to quit the race while most Missouri Democrats want him to stay.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the Show Me State finds McCaskill earning 48% support to Akins 38%. Nine percent (9%) like some other candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.
Ann can be fun to read, even now, but she revealed her semi-Conservative talker mouth is actually quite establishment. She proved that by choosing Mitt over the true Conservatives. I am never going to forget that!
She’s toeing the establishment line with this schtick.
The voters made their choice, that is why we have primaries. “
That primary was a three-way, and Akin got barely above a third of the primary vote, meaning almost 2/3rds of Missouri Republicans wanted SOMEONE ELSE. The “someone else” vote would now be about 90%.
See #35.
A near majority have ‘very unfavorable’ view of Akin.
A Majority want Akin to quit.
If Akin were to remotely respect the wishes of voters, and the wishes of his fellow Republicans in the state, he would step aside.
“You guys are just using this as an excuse to undo the primary results, which is anarchy.”
Hogwash. There is no ‘anarchy’ to a simple process.
AKIN HAS UNDONE THE RESULTS OF THE GENERAL ELECTION BY MAKING HIMSELF UNELECTABLE. HE CANT WIN. We are trying to prevent a disaster in November.
Are they trying to overturn two elections too, Mr. Carville? Oh wait, that was the Bill Clinton talking-point. My mistake; this is about Todd Akin.
I fear for the nation if voters are truly this naive.
He can't win. They have to decide what matters more to them: Akin's ego or their agenda items. We know what Akin's answer has been so far, and, of course, that mysterious and secretive CNP (Council on National Policy) group as well.
Of his big primary endorsers, we know where Huckabee stands but I noticed Michelle Bachmann has stayed silent despite endorsing him in the primary. "We're not offering any comment on Akin right now," her campaign says.
Well, I answered your post on another thread, but since you’re here now, I’ll repost it.

Brunner backs Romney during Missouri Senate debate .
Posted on July 7, 2012 at 8:31 AM
ST. LOUIS (AP) Missouri businessman John Brunner enthusiastically endorsed Mitt Romney for president Friday night, but his two rival GOP Senate candidates appeared more hesitant to do so as they clashed during the first and perhaps last televised debate before the August primary election.
Brunner, who like Romney is a wealthy businessman, praised the presumptive Republican presidential nominee as just the kind of leader we need right now when he was asked during the debate whether Romney was conservative enough for him.
U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, who repeatedly cast himself as Missouris most conservative congressman during the debate, said he was **just going to wait and see, issue by issue, for what he does before deciding whether to support Romney. As he did with former President George W. Bush, Akin said he would support Romney sometimes but oppose him if he tries to increase bureaucracy.
Former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who has the endorsement of the Tea Party Express, largely avoided a direct answer about her support for Romney, instead stressing: I have fought the establishment from day one of my political career. A Steelman spokesman later said that like Akin, she would work with Romney on an issue-by-issue basis.
The three Republicans will compete in an Aug. 7 primary for the right to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in the November election. Missouris Senate race is one of several close contests around the nation that could help determine whether Republicans can wrest control of the Senate away from Democrats. It already has attracted millions of dollars of TV advertising from interest groups.

But the candidates clashed when they accused one another of distorting each others professional backgrounds and positions on issues.
Brunner, who previously contributed money to Akins congressional campaigns, has been running TV ads claiming Akin and Steelman were manufacturing debt by votes they took as federal and state lawmakers. On Friday, Brunner accused my good friend Congressman Akin of working to introduce a bill requiring all Americans to purchase health care in 2009 similar to the insurance mandate in Obamas 2010 health care law that the Republican candidates roundly denounced. Brunner later cited a February 2009 article in the online St. Louis Beacon publication backing up that claim.
Akin did not directly challenge the assertion during the debate, but declared of Brunner: Hes got a mud factory going. Akin campaign spokesman Ryan Hite said afterward that the congressmans staff had studied the potential for a health insurance mandate but Akin ultimately decided against it and never introduced such legislation.
Steelman sought to turn the criticism to Brunner. **She highlighted that he had contributed money to St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, a Democrat whom she described as pro-abortion, anti-gun and pro-Obama. Brunner said Dooley was a friend who understands the issues for minorities and jobs and had met with Brunner at his Vi-Jon manufacturing plant, which makes personal health care products.
REPEAT:

Yep. Thats the ticket.
What good will it do if and when Akin wins Missouri conservative votes, but loses to McCaskill by over 10 points because she wins all the other votes?
When Akin is being used to bash Republicans from coast to coast, it is forcing those other Republicans to respond. Akin caused this mess with his foot-in-mouth disorder.
He’s down by 10 points - a lot worse than any other candidate against McCaaskill.
But they don't and Akin's won.
Akin's can win, the election is 3 months away, plenty of time to recover.
He can't win if Republicans continue to undermine him.
Grow a pair and don’t worry so much. Stand up and be a man (or woman)... stand on your principles. That is what built this country.
She was really quite the bitch the other day. She just lost Mittster a vote (though a reluctant one). Cannot stand the woman. I think I will use the two Coulter books my hubby bought in past years to fuel the BBQ. What a phony, shrill Dowdish cartoon she is!!!
This race is over. Akin is toxic.
I think in terms of news cycles. They have names. There is the RNC convention; DNC convention; there is Isaac and many other 'caines (literal and figurative) between now and Nov 6; there is another 10 cycles - unemployment week 1, unemp. week 2, and so on; There are an unknown perhaps countless "October Surprises" across the land; there will be the currently unknowable shootings that will control the news cycles...
In short, so MUCH will be happening in the news between now and 11/6, whatever Akin said, whatever he meant, will be a distant memory supplanted by a trillion other issues and things - it PALES and will fade.
... unless we don't let it.
It's a state issue, and the more republicans and conservatives outside that state leave it alone and have it's own life, the better.
For the sake of federalism, lets NOT nationalize it (and thus give it life it does not deserve).
She’s not just towing the line she’s trying to out Pravda Pravda.
"If they really were concerned that Akin would destroy the pto-life movement they would demand that the pro-abortion Willard stand down '
Old style FR BUMP what you said.....
He can't win if Republicans continue to undermine him.
And of course who can't entertain the notion that Akin undermined himself, oh no it was that evil GOP establishment that did that.
I saw the interview and heard the words by Akin, there was no gun up to his head when he hit himself with a pie.
I guess taking responsibility for ones words is a myth for you just like the democrats.
Akin has already nationalized it with his outrageous words and I am pro-life.
Oh that's correct Saint Todd is never wrong, my boo-boo.
Grow the F up.
He’s 12 points behind.
You socon idiots are deluded, as usual.
