Bob Dole, the last Republican to challenge a Democratic president, has urged Mitt Romney to confront their party's Right wing and likened the Romney-Ryan ticket to his own ultimately unsuccessful partnership with Jack Kemp in 1996.
Mr Dole, a former Kansas Senator defeated by Bill Clinton 16 years ago, said the party should follow his example of "mainstream" Republicanism and become more appealing to ethnic minorities and young people to secure its future.
"We have got to be open," he said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. "We cannot be a single-issue party or single-philosophy party". He added: "There's a big split in our party. There's this undercurrent of rigid conservatism where you don't dare not toe the line".
The intervention from the Republican elder statesman comes after Todd Akin, an ultraconservative Missouri congressman, hijacked Mr Romney's preparations for the party's convention in Florida next week with his controversial remarks on abortion and "legitimate rape".
Mr Dole, now 89, disclosed that he had advised Mr Romney on running for president during a meeting at his Washington office in November. He said the former Massachusetts governor showed "flexibility" and a willingness to forge the type of bipartisan deals rejected by current Republican leaders in Congress.
He conceded that the presidential hopeful, who has an estimated $250 million (£160 million) fortune, had struggled to charm American voters still suffering from economic woe...

Oh. So HE was the idiot. Thanks, Bob.
Let me see if I have THE FACTS RIGHT!
This Tea Party guy will say anything to save every baby, even stupid stuff..
On the other side, we have a woman who will lie about everything to kill as many as she can?
Yep.. KILL HIM... Geeeeze
Dude never won a single national election.
Who needs his advice.
Yeah.
And for referring to himself in the third person.
Interpretation: “We can't stand for anything because we might offend someone.”
Is he still wandering around in the left wing of that nursing home???
Honestly, this appears to be what happens to people who spend their entire lives in politics, and in the beltway. They start to believe in the alternative reality that emanates from Washington. In reality the democratic party an extremist party, and the strategy of the right should be to paint them as such - because it’s true.
The current administration has had avowed communists in its inner circle (e.g. Van Jones), has at its helm a guy who adamantly defended partial birth abortion, essentially bought GM and gave it to the unions, refused to prosecute absolute voting place violations by the Black Panthers, is sucking over 750 billion dollars away from medicare, has a law student who things condoms should be free acting as a spokesperson, etc. etc., but Dole thinks Romney should step back from a diverse group of Americans who think that the Boston Tea Party was a good thing and believe that they shouldn’t be taxed more to pay for a government that annually spends more than it has? He is clearly not in touch with reality.
Once a SQUISHY MODERATE always a SQUISHY MODERATE.

Yo' great uncle Bob....
Thanks for your service to our country...
.... in war and and elected office.
NOW SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE!...
Another RINO sounds off.
“BOB DOLE: Mitt Romney Needs To Back Away From The Tea Party”
Dole (whom I believe Newt referred to as a “bagman for the welfare state”, or something similar) must be getting concerned that Romney is not leading with his chin like Dole and McCain did. It’s got to be very disconcerting to these establishment party hacks when they see a Republican presidential nominee who doesn’t seem to understand he’s supposed to throw the contest.
Unlike those two Senators, I think Governor Romney actually wants to live in the White House.
A white flag won’t get the Socialist New Democrats to stop their revolution to upend America forever.
With useless old bags like this freak, GOP will have even harder time attracting the yoooo-th.
Except for unsolicited political advice, probably the biggest decision he makes anymore is whether to have vanilla or chocolate pudding for dessert.
“Well, on the pudding issue, Bob Dole has always stood for vanilla. So that is what Bob Dole will have.”
Bob, it’s your turn to shut up.
Hey, Dole, KMA!
