Well said. This sorry Akin episode reminds me 100% of the Ann Richards/Clayton Williams fiasco. Williams jumped out to a huge early lead in the Texas gubernatorial race. I think it was on the strength of a tough law and order commercial in which he was shown standing by the side of a road next to a chain gang as he pointed a thumb at them and said "how would I deal with criminals? I'd introduce them to the joy of bustin' up rocks!"
Then came the infamous remark when he was socked in at an airport due to bad weather, and said "bad weather is like rape; if it's inevitable, relax and enjoy it". Next thing you know, there's Mother Richards making speeches in which she said "we know now how he feels about rape".
Claytie didn't stop there. Asked to respond to a Richards remark, Claytie quipped "is she drankin' agin'?' (Ann Richards was a recovering alcoholic). People deserted him in droves. People I knew who usually voted Republican either voted for Richards or did not vote. My wife and I voted for him anyway; but it was a wasted effort.
Ann Richards was one of the staunchest pro-abortion politicians ever. I once heard her in a speech refer to the "right to choose" as a "sacred right". Akin is Claytie Williams II.
Thanks for the anecdote. I did not know about it. It is a perfect example. If you missed it, you may find this interesting =
