Nobody ever mentions that Dan Quayle was actually not doing the spelling himself. He was in a classroom (public skool) and a teacher had written it on the board that way, probably not because she wanted to trip him up, but because she didn’t know how to spell it herself. All he did was spell it out loud as it was written.
What was he supposed to do? Stop and correct the teacher in front of the cameras? Or read it out loud with the error? It was a lose-lose situation.
Quayle was a very strong candidate, having soundly defeated entrenched Democrat incumbents for both House and Senate here in Indiana.
After the Clintonian plurality loss, he laughed all the way to the bank becoming Chairman of Global Investments at hedge fund Cerberus.
By the way, p-o-t-a-t-o-e is a perfectly valid spelling.
