Another Missouri Republican consultant suggests that Representative Jo Ann Emerson, the Republican who has represented Missouris eighth district since 1996, could be a top contender to replace Todd Akin if he quits. Her name has been making the rounds among party insiders, thanks in part to the fact that shes currently the longest-serving House member in Missouri. Missouri GOP executive director Lloyd Smith used to be her chief-of-staff.
UPDATE: A colleague points out that Emerson is a member of the moderate-leaning Republican Main Street partnership, and generally less rightward than the three Akin, Sarah Steelman, and John Brunner who ran in the primary. Emersons American Conservative Union ranking for 2011 was 56, and for 2010 88; Akins ratings, in contrast, were 91.67 and 100 in those years respectively.
This is how the MSM and RINO’s choose our candidates, textbook example
sad. MO has a conservative running who stumbled over his words....and they are willing to toss him aside for a RINO?
what on earth are we coming too? We deserve what we get then....shame on us....
and that not even elected by the PEOPLE!

We Must Stand with Life, Stand with Conservatism, Stand with America and Stand with Todd Akin.
Who cares? This is an issue for the voters of MO to decide.
What are Conservative/GOP so easily distracted from by the bluster of the Democrat/Media propaganda machine?
We are winning big all over the place. Time to quit being suckers for the Democrat propaganda and stay on message.
The issue is still the economy people.

Who finished second in that primary? Seems like that would be the logical choice.
Akin killed himself, not “RINOs” or the Enemamedia. Stupid is as stupid does.
Pile it on Freepers. Keep demanding that Akin pull out of the race. then we can replace him with another Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe.
If Akin pulls out the race, then we will be guaranteed another liberal Republican replacement.
The Missouri Republican Party is as bad as the national party. Logic doesn’t enter into it.
if he were a Democrat this would never have gotten beyond one-time local newspaper article
the MSM blew this all out of proportion and we will end up with a liberal Republican candidate
I have nothing but disdain for the GOP
If Akin does step down, and if the MO GOP appoints someone who didn’t run in the primaries, both Steelman and Brunner should sue. At a minimum, they could get an injunction against anyone who did not run the primary.
Brunner and Steelman should have the right of first refusal — they ran #2 and #3 in the primary.
Any appointee other than one who ran in the primary is a slap in the face to those who voted in the Republican Senatoral primary. The voters deserve better than a bunch of GOPelites ‘selecting’ a candidate.
I’ve read many threads on this and apparently Mo. has sore loser rules prohibiting those who were in the primary and lost cannot run in the general.
Akin needs to cut a deal immediately where he says he’ll step down if X replaces him, and he picks a CONSERVATIVE.
Cannot run as a 3rd party or simply cannot run?
If the elected nominee drops out, that run would seem to be moot, because the contender is not running against the one who dropped out.
Agreed.
If she finished second in the primary, a) she is not eligible, and b) if she were, she would be the logical choice to take the spot. Why WOULDN’T the second place finisher be elevated to first? But, as I say, she’s not eligible if she was on the primary ballot.
Akin is not withdrawing and I am glad of that. Jo Ann Emerson is a RINO. She would be worthless as our MO Senator.
He's probably already cut a deal.... with some underground Democrat org (Soros funded) for a couple of million to stay in the race. The guy can't be as stupid as he appears to be, but the lust for money can make people do some goofy things.
