Jo Ann Emerson Floated as Akin Replacement
NRO ^ | Katrina Trinko | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 08/22/2012 10:44:10 AM PDT by Da Bilge Troll

Another Missouri Republican consultant suggests that Representative Jo Ann Emerson, the Republican who has represented Missouri’s eighth district since 1996, could be a top contender to replace Todd Akin if he quits. Her name has been making the rounds among party insiders, thanks in part to the fact that she’s currently the longest-serving House member in Missouri. Missouri GOP executive director Lloyd Smith used to be her chief-of-staff.

UPDATE: A colleague points out that Emerson is a member of the moderate-leaning Republican Main Street partnership, and generally less rightward than the three — Akin, Sarah Steelman, and John Brunner — who ran in the primary. Emerson’s American Conservative Union ranking for 2011 was 56, and for 2010 88; Akin’s ratings, in contrast, were 91.67 and 100 in those years respectively.

...how can you reconcile the fact that he stated that legitimate rape doesn’t result in pregnancy or only very rarely. He is saying that if you say you were raped and got pregnant then you weren’t really raped but in effect you wanted it and enjoyed it but are now claiming rape for some other reason.

Akin didn't say that. First of all, the word he meant to say is forcible instead of legitimate. Paul Ryan and Akin co-sponsored an abortion-related bill that would have limited federal funding for abortions to victims of forcible rape," rather than just rape. The FBI's definition of rape is known as "forcible rape," and it is used to distinguish between statutory rape and other kinds of rape.

Akins never said that rape could not happen during forcible rape. This is what he said during an interview on the Huckabee show:

Huckabee asked Akin whether he was talking about "forcible rape" when he used the term "legitimate rape."

"I was talking about forcible rape, and it was absolutely the wrong word," Akin said.

Akin said he understands that women can become pregnant from rape. "I didn't mean to imply that wasn't the case," he said. "That does happen."

“What do you believe his core beliefs are re rape?”

That if you were “legitimately raped”, (and you are under the obligation to explain and defend that phrase), you had a very small chance of getting pregnant.
So if this many women are getting pregnant and they say they were raped, they must be lying and really just wanted it to happen, or they enjoyed it, or how else could they have gotten pregnant. Remember forcible rape causes your reproductive system to shut down.

He said it willingly and wen into detail on his beliefs, watch the interview.

Any appointee other than one who ran in the primary is a slap in the face to those who voted in the Republican Senatoral primary.

The establishment doesn't give a rat's behind what conservatives think. They, for good reason, believe that the same morons supporting Romney will hold their nose and vote for Emerson. And, the establishment would be right to assume that.

Romney, with the potentially help of RINOs like Emerson, will keep moving to the left. When it happens, the same clueless bastards that voted for them will express shock and wondered how Republicans can betray them.

Doesn’t amaze me. Suddenly the ‘RINO’ is flowing freely on FR. Almost like all these ‘conservatives’ weren’t what they claimed to be all this time. Nope. No shock here. At all. Expected actually.

Of course those of us saying that for a while now were called bad names, but the proof is there for all to read.

The Wagner-Akin swap does not require judicial approval and allows Akin to save face.

Wagner could rally entire GOP and crush McCaskill.

I have nothing but disdain for the GOP

Then, make the pledge, never, ever vote for a Republican that isn't a conservative.

I have. I will never vote for a Republican that will move the nation to the left. I did it twice with the Bushes.

The only chance this nation has is for conservatives to only vote for conservatives. If that happens, Republicans will have to put up conservative candidates.

There is no chance, though, of the Republican party being a conservative one if conservatives keep supporting liberal Republicans like Romney.

McCaskill chose him as an opponent because of his vulnerability

Chose him how? Does this McCaskill campaign ad aimed at Akin look like she selected him?

Or how about this one.

This accusation that McCaskill picked Akin is nonsense. She had campaign ads against all three. And she attacked Akin for being a conservative. You have to be some sort of conspiracy nut to believe that she was helping Akin. She may have seen him as the weakest candidate because of his strong conservative views.

I predict a major backlash if Akin does leave and the GOP leadership picks her.

Why would you think that? If someone with the liberal record of Romney can herd conservatives, even JimRob of all people, into voting for him, there is no reason for the establishment to believe conservatives won't bend over and vote for Emerson.

Any number of politicians would advance the pro-life position far better than Akin ever will.

Yes, Romney and Emerson are sure do advance the pro-life cause better than Akin would!

Even if he wins, he’s still working for his Democrat backers.

Yeah, a guy with 97.5% conservative voting record in six terms in Congress is working with Democrats. That is simply a stupid contention.

I do not see the sense in tossing a man who is otherwise rock solid on the issues. ESPECIALLY considering the damage another RINO replacement will do.

Unfortunately, people like you are swimming upstream. The conservatives masses will be herded into voting for both Romney and Emerson and will end up right back where we were in 2008.

I pointed out to you in a subseqent post that Aikin said he meant the word forcible not legitimate. In the context of a bill co-sponsored with Ryan on abortion funding for "forcible rape," it is clear what he meant. The bill passed the house with over 250 votes including those of many Dems.

The rest of your "understanding" of what he meant is just a fantasy when you substitute forcible with legitimate. His junk science conclusion about the body shutting down resulting in less of chance of pregnancy is just that junk science. He did say that women can get pregnant during forcible rape--just that it was rare.

I have a problem with the overreaction to Akin's initial statement during the gotcha interview. He issued an apology several times and explained what he meant. Is this sufficient to cause him to be removed from the ticket after he won the nomination in a primary. I think not. It is just part of the Dem cabal that launched Sandra Fluke who will be speaking at the Dem convention, no doubt attacking Rush Limbaugh despite his apology. Every time we throw someone to the Dem beast as a sacrifice, it does not end the attacks. Just the opposite, it whets their appetite for more.

So which Leftwing propaganda outfit do you work for?

No one could be so completely ignorant of politics to think electing someone who disagrees with Conservatives 100% of the time is better then electing someone who agrees with them 70% of the time.

So either you are a Leftist troll or a complete political imbecile.

“This is what he said during an interview on the Huckabee show”

This was after the firestorm broke. Go watch the original interview.

Problem is - he stumbled over his brain, not his words. He is either a certifiable idiot, a misogynist, or a democrat plant. I am leaning toward the latter at this point.

“is just that junk science”

And when did he realize it was junk science? Only when he was caught red handed saying something so outlandish that he was force (and I use the word forced) to recant.

No one challenged him to come up with this answer, he volunteered it, leading me to the conclusion that he had cherry picked his research to substantiate a belief he already held.

What a great way to defend a life and death position. Idiocy.

Being right is sometimes a lonely place. But it’s still the best place to be. Far better than lying to one’s self about the things that exist around them.

Pile it on Freepers. Keep demanding that Akin pull out of the race. then we can replace him with another Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe.

Nice try. Actually we'd be replacing Claire McCaskill, the incumbent Democrat. Akin will never achieve that.
