Sources: Akin may not really be in race for good
CBS/AP ^ | August 22, 2012

(CBS/AP) Rep. Todd Akin defied the nation's top Republicans Tuesday and forged ahead with his besieged Senate bid, declaring the party was overreacting to his comments that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape" and by insisting he abandon his campaign.

Akin pledged to carry on with his quest to unseat Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri. But his bid faced tall obstacles: a lack of money, a lack of party support and no assurance that his apologies would be enough to heal a self-inflicted political wound.

--snip--

But, says Andrews, "Two sources tell CBS News Aken's real strategy here is to hang tough -- for now -- and see if that wins enough money and support to stay in the race. In others words-- his final decision to stay in--may not be final."

“he’s a neanderthal “

Like Tom “lesbianism is so rampant in some of the schools in southeast Oklahoma that they’ll only let one girl go to the bathroom.” Coburn in 2004?

Lesser politicians have come back from worse, AFAIK Dick Wadham isn’t running his campaign.

This may be the first campaign in history where one party spends no money on their own campaign, finances their opposition and wins in a landslide...it could happen.

So.... Akin ran against McCaskill for the position, and then got ‘caught’ in this roadside sex incident.

Was this to make McCaskill look better ?

I can't remember the last time Republicans were this united about anything. Maybe Obamacare.

Imagine if all the same people that hurled invective and called for Akin's scalp would turn that energy toward Eric Holder & company. But no, it's "Obama's a nice guy" and "Janet Napolitano's a girls' girl" and "all Al Franken / Mary Landrieu did was steal elections, what's wrong with that?"

I figured that would ruffle some feathers.

With regards to “legitimate” rape, he never said the woman wills away a fetus He is referring to the biology of sexual intercourse and fertilization. You may disagree with it but at least be accurate in your description. I also reject your outrageous conclusion that he thinks rape is no big deal. Further, it is clear from the context he is not suggesting some rapes are legitimate and some aren’t. To say so is dishonest.

Listen, until three days ago I never heard of this guy. I do know that I am sick and tired of the Republican establishment (and now conservative pundits) throwing people under the bus at the drop of a hat for the sole purpose of political gain. That stinks and demonstrates a lack of integrity.

The Democrats will go after him anyway so it doesn’t do any good. What this does show is that the Republican establishment has no faith in the people of Missouri.

Your last paragraph demonstrates this political calculation and, yes, I understand the numbers. I am just sick and tired of being treated like a piece on a chess board.

Thank you.

His comment also implied that if a woman did get pregnant, then she wasn’t “legitimately raped” ... because if she had been conception either 1. wouldn’t have occured or 2) a miscarriage would take place.

This is hugely OFFENSIVE to women who have been raped, gotten pregnant as a result and who DID NOT ABORT but instead choose to keep the child or put the child up for adoption. He is dissing pro-Life victims of rape as well.

Harry...There is a play on words here. Akin IS the candidate. Ballots are being printed as I speak. It little matters if we support him as our candidate or not. That being said, he has until Sept.25 to petition the court to remove his name. But SOS Robin Carnahan can contest said petition. And for how long? By then 6 weeks to election. And she is a RABID Democrat.

Missouri is a "Sore-Loser" state. This precludes Primary contenders from running in the general election or as write ins.

In a nut shell Harry? We're SCREWED! Only way to defeat Mother McCaskill is to vote for Akin come Nov. Unless of course he pulls the pin (as he should have done yesterday)and some other conservative Republican replaces him.

So CBS puts out an article designed to keep this going as long as possible because they like Republicans? Really?

That is not what he said or even implied. Have you listened to the actual audio? I have found that many people drawing conclusions in this situation are basing those conclusions on someone else's description of the comments.

Rep. Todd Akin, doing his best to help republicans snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Cheney shold have taken him out hunting yesterday.

Pete, forget the “legitimate” comment. His argument was that a woman can “shut down” and therefore not get pregnant. PURE BS. Now, this reflects not a “mistake,” or some “bad information,” but a world view that doesn’t understand the essence of rape, and therefore is hugely offensive to women.

No, we have to do more than that. We have to support him, donate to him, campaign for him. Defeatism is not a winning strategy.

Sen. Roy Blunt issued a joint statement Tuesday with all four of Missouri's living former Republican senators — John Ashcroft, Kit Bond, Jim Talent and John Danforth — saying "it serves the national interest" for Akin to step aside. Pointing to the group, Romney said the congressman should "accept their counsel."

Yeh -- right!!! Let's dredge up some dead ones too while we're at it. None of them ever lifted one finger to help him get elected and now they want him to accept their counsel. Where they been all these years. We don't hear from them on any political issue criticizing the Democrats or McCaskill -- but now they weigh in.

Akin is a zombie (walking dead) now and will never be resurrected. He needs to realize that and “pull the pin” if he cares in the least little bit about the cause of conservatism.

I don’t believe it has to go to the Supreme Court yet, not until after the 25th, although I could be wrong.

That is what was implied and that was how it was taken by every woman whether pro-Life or not.
