Sarah Palin endorsed a third-party candidacy against Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., if he persists in his refusal to drop out of the general election campaign after making startling comments about rape and abortion.
Weve got to take back the Senate and Missouri is a must-win state, Palin told Fox News Greta Van Susteren. The way we do that is to have someone like Sarah Steelman be able to run even if its as a third-party candidate to be able to run and help us take this back. Palin endorsed Steelman in the primary, which was regarded as showdown for the privilege of challenging the deeply-unpopular Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.
The former Alaska governor reiterated her support for a third-party run when considering how conservatives should respond if Akin does not drop out before the state prints the ballots for the general election.
Maybe it is a third-party run of Sarah Steelman that I could get behind, she said. Granted, the status quo has got to go [Steelman's campaign motto] would be an odd name for a third party, but well coin it, well adopt it, well run with it if thats what it takes in order to get a common sense, constitutional, happens-to-be-pro-life woman in Missouri to clean up this mess that has been created and at the same time take back the Senate.

It’s my understanding that Steelman can’t replace Akin. They have that sore loser law.
I believe Sarah said someone like Steelman, but I’m not absolutely sure about that.
All three of the Republicans running in the primary polled ahead of Ma Claire.
No matter what happens, Ma Claire remains extremely unpopular in MO.
Kabar, I got to hand it to you, your continuing analysis about Akin and the surrounding political interplay is dead on.
If it can work in Alaska, could it work in Missouri?
It could work in Missouri I suppose. But was Lisa Murkowski not the incumbent Senator at the time? I do not think that we have a similar situation in Missouri.
Lisa had a ready "machine" and funding to pursue her corrupt attempt to stay in office; she was successful. She was corrupt because she did not honor the primary results. Not much difference in behavior between Lisa and the Democrats.
the Senate is too close and too important. Cant support Sarah on this.

So what would you do? Akin will lose to McCaskill in a landslide.
Akin was intellectually correct, but politically stupid. Even Jesus, when sending his disciples out into the world, told them to be “wise as a serpent; harmless as a dove.” I’m thinking Akin is a Christian man, but, apparently he never read that in The Bible. Akin dude is wise as a can of Spam and as harmless as a run-away Mac Truck.
The former Alaska governor should know that third party candidates help the opposition to win.

Oh; like Akin has a chance to win!!! He will lose by 20 percentage points. If I lived in MO, I would not vote for McCaskill, but I would not vote for this self-serving idiot who thinks he’s doing God’s service by not dropping out. The harm he has done to the Pro-life cause will result in the innocent babies in the womb having to pay the price for his blunder. So, all we can do is let the Devil and the Democrats win this one. I hope that Akin, his ugly, old wife and homely kids are happy.
To be fair to Akin (who I believe is probably a good man with good intentions)......

BULLS**T !!! If he was a good man and had good intentions, he would have stepped aside for the good of Missouri and this nation. He would have had a legacy of respect and honor. But, no; the self-serving idiot would rather take the Republican Party and this country down than withdraw from the race. Now, he will never be elected to another office and his legacy will be that he is one of the most hated men in America.
The one thing that you dont seem to understand is that the dems will hang legitimate rape around the throats of every single Republican running for office...up to and including Romney and Ryan.
In fact, they are already attempting to do that.
Dont think for a moment that it wont have an effect.

I dont agree. the answer is of course we know that this is not true and we need to focus on the economy and not grandstanding. Naming the game works. Stop runningn like rabbits.
Of course she endorsed a third party candidate if Akin doesn’t get out - unlike some bozos who post on this site, she has some common sense.
“No, you take personally what I posted and kvetch, and try and beat me with your feminist stick. Use your brain instead of your feelings and think this through. “
Wow, that is the first time I’ve ever been accused of being a feminist! I have lived a very traditional, conservative life, and respect the men in my life and the important role they play. I have put my family above personal career goals and aspirations. If being offended by someone insulting rape victims is a being a feminist, maybe I am one, and never knew it.
“Wrong answer. If you really care about the fate of the country as so many of the anti-Akin posters say, then you will vote for Akin not “may” vote for him. Akin is the only other person on the ballot who can defeat McCaskill. Same rationale as voting for Romney. It is one or the other.”
Well, I could turn that around, and say Akin should drop out for the sake of the country. Again, he’s too tone-deaf to do so. Perhaps the threat of a third party challenger will help him make the moral choice. And I’m not at all convinced he is the only person who can beat Claire ... not anymore. His name on the ballot could potentially cost Romney the state of Missouri, which I also didn’t think was possible before this debacle began.
I guess I’m old-fashioned and think Akin and Romney should earn my vote. Perhaps in the end, the fear of the alternatives will compel me to vote for subpar candidates.
“So what would you do? Akin will lose to McCaskill in a landslide.”
I’m gonna hope you’re wrong. Every day that goes by without the world coming to some sort of horrible end, Akin’s staements seem a little less outrageous. Not correct or smart, just not as bad as they’ve been made out to be.
And by election day, the people of Missouri will hopefully vote for the person whose positions best represent them, not the person NBC/ABC etc say they should vote for.
Note I’m in California, I’ve got no dog in this fight except in so far as every good American should be interested.
As a longtime and early supporter of Palin, I think her thinking on this issue is lacking and appears to be “shooting from the hip”, versus a well thought-out response.
If Akin is staying in, there is only one way to win and that is by supporting Akin.
Palin is in camp with GOPe reasoning on this one and the GOPe are totally undermining any chance to win this race now.
That speaks poorly for the intelligence of the Missouri voter. One verbal gaffe, which really affects no one in the real world in their real lives, is enough to cause people to vote for Obama? In a referendum, Missouri voters went 71% against Obamacare. Are you saying that Missouri voters would rather have Obamacare fully implemented rather than elect someone who would repeal it all because of a poor choice of words by a GOP senate nominee? If that is the case, then Missouri and this country deserve the government it gets. Maybe, we are just too dumb to be trusted with the fate of the country.
I guess Im old-fashioned and think Akin and Romney should earn my vote. Perhaps in the end, the fear of the alternatives will compel me to vote for subpar candidates.
If you still haven't made up your mind as to which way to voter or even vote at all, then Romney has a very serious problem and could well lose Missouri, which McCain barely won in 2008.
De gustibus non est disputandum.
Speaking about 'dead' ........
Message to the GOP: Stop attacking Akin.
I’m so glad you find humor in this. May your confidence in Akin be rewarded by MO voters. In fact, they HAVE elected a DEAD GUY once before.
Is that it? LoL. Akin only down by 10? After being thrown under the Republican bus 10 billion times I’m surprised he even registers in a poll. 2 1/4 months left until the election maybe you guys can run him over 100 billion times more with your self-defeating buses.
I agree with her sentiment, but I agree with you that if he does stay in that supporting him is our best bet.
