East German border guard. He waited to the last second as the final stretch of barbed wire was being placed to close the last remaining opening in the Berlin wall. He saw his opportunity when the others had momentarily turned away, and he made his dash for freedom. If memory serves, his mother remained in East Germany, but was later reunited with him in the West. There is a 16mm film record of his escape, wherein you see him turn and scramble for the barricade. Then, tossing his rifle as he jumps the wire to freedom.
