Akin Says He Has No Plans to Quit Missouri Senate Race

Akin said he has no plans to withdraw.

“I don’t know that I’m the only person in public office who’s suffered from foot-in-mouth disease here, and this was a very, very serious error. On the other hand, there are so many good people in Missouri who nominated me, and they understood my heart,” Akin said.

Akin said no Republicans have called him and asked him to withdraw from the race.

“No one has called me and said, ‘Todd, I think you should drop out,’” Akin said. “No one has said that. But I gather people are saying that in the media, but they didn’t specifically call me and tell me that.”

There is no evidence that Akin won because of Dem crossover votes. I know I voted for Akin because he has been a fairly reliable conservative congressman, and I was not thrilled about either Brunner’s or Steelman’s campaign. But if Akin withdraws—for Brunner, Steelman, Bond, Talent, or whomever—I will gladly support the new nominee over ObamaClaire McCaskill.

Seems to me that there are quite a few conservatives, including Freepers, with no heart at all. Resisting the tyranny of political correctness is hard, and they are just looking for an excuse to enter the warm embrace of submission. Oh, a Republican said something that the media can misconstrue? That's never happened before! Let's take this opportunity to be every bit as petty and irrational as the lefties so that we can look around at our leftist masters and say "See? I'm cool too!"

Thank you! When I originally read the complaint against Akin, I kept reading to find the "horror" or it all, and then realized it wasn't much of anything. The left took it and ran with it (they don't need much), and the right helped them carry the ball. Pathetic! It's never easy to stand up for the unborn (people stumble with words), because so many have killed their own or know someone close who did.

Todd Akin is one of about 50 million American adults who I would feel comfortable with holding that senate seat. The key thing being that they actually have to win that senate seat. If we need another conservative to step in because Mr. Akin can’t keep his foot out of his mouth, so be it. Just because the Democrats can send a Biden to DC for decades doesn’t mean that we should try to emulate them. The media treats us unfairly, sure, but that means we have to avoid saying stupid things. If you can’t manage that, you can’t represent us.

If you are referring to the Republican Party, I'd say they haven't been honorable for a long while. The rank-and-file voters, maybe, but not the party.

The only reason that this guy's statement is such a liability is because we have allowed the leftist media to have so much power in dictating the narrative. If, every time the media tried to make a big deal out of something stupid, or something misspoken, we fought them tooth and nail, they wouldn't have the full power and free rein they have now. Instead, we cave every time, allowing them to decide what is and is not allowed to be said.

To be honest, I think what bothers me most about this situation is not the possibility that this guy should drop out for political expedience, but that so many Freepers here are simply wallowing in the same jackal-like politically-correct feeding frenzy that the leftists routinely do. Freepers seem to be having a contest regarding who can heap more derision on this guy - almost as if they are happy to have an excuse to be on the same side as the media hacks and other assorted lefty nutbags. When I see that, I can't help but think we are lost.
