Legitimate rape became a Twitter trending topic in the U.S. this afternoon after liberal blog Talking Points Memo posted a video of Rep. Todd Akin claiming that victims of legitimate rape are unlikely to become pregnant.

The worst part was when he went into the whole “a woman’s body has a way to shutdown the whole process....”
Its nonsense. He made himself look bad today, and its one of those comments that there is coming back from. His election chances at this point are non-existent. From what I understand, if he steps down before the 22nd, someone else can take his place, whatever that happens to require, it needs to be done, and soon.
Which is why at news conferences, the smartest pols say what needs to be said, and nothing more. Don't give an opening.
Just another "cough up the ball" on the 1 yard line. That's why I don't frequent FR as much as I used to in the past.
Newbies who don't get National Politics, nor do they know anything about the stuff we really need to win.
"Saint Sarah" made the call, but these a$$clowns still don't get it.
Anybody who isn’t sipping on Kool-Aid knows that this guy bombed his chance to win the election today. At this point, its all about getting him out and getting someone else in who can still salvage the Senate seat. Steelman can get it done, she needs to get on the ballot. McCaskill is a weak candidate, she can’t fight on the issues, she has no positive record to run on, but in a lowest-common denominator situation, she can win simply on a controversial gaffe where people vote for “the least crazy” of two candidates.
The media will not let up on this, as long as this guy is around, his name won’t be mentioned without an immediate referral to these comments, regardless of how many apologies he issues. He just created a guaranteed debate question that Romney will be faced with, and a noose to hang around the neck of all Republicans running for office this cycle.
The GOP has never blown an opportunity to blow an opportunity.
How dense can someone possibly be?
He’s NOT in trouble because he opposes legal abortion in cases of rape, or because he made an argument that the rapist should be punished.
Now, given that about only 20% of the public wants to ban abortion in cases of rape or incest, had he made that position the centerpiece of his campaign, he likely would have lost the campaign, but it wouldn’t instantly be over like it is now.
He’s in TROUBLE because he believes that if a woman is raped her body will somehow keep her from getting pregnant. THAT’s the statement that matters.
Nobody that would be horrified by that comment is going to suddenly change their mind when the statement is placed in context. The context doesn’t affect the meaning of what he said.
They're going to pound this like the Allied naval forces at Normandy.
THATs the statement that matters.
It seems that "THATs the statement that matters" to you.
It seems that others find other statements to be what matters, like what does he mean by "legitimate" rape.
You seem rather "squishy" to me.
I’m in Arizona and the local newspaper already has this story front-and-center on their website, guaranteed it will be on the first or second page in the actual newspaper tomorrow. This is going to dominate the news cycle for the next few days and you’re going to see the entire Republican party get painted by the same brush that this guy brought out.
I just.....I don’t know anymore, there’s always some idiot who crawls out of the woodwork and says something so stupid that it boggles the mind.
“herp, derp, women can’t get pregnant because uhm, their magical lady parts stop the rape from making them preggers.”
It fits into every single stereotype that the left has been trying to sell to the general public, painting Republicans as “old and white and clueless about a woman’s body.”
This guy just gave them an absolute freebie, completely unforced error on his part. What the heck was he thinking?
He has a little bit of time to drop out.....VERY LITTLE. This must happen tomorrow, so take action:
People like this DO NOT LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES.
He will repeat gaffes in the future, possibly EVEN WORSE.
Contact Akin and the Missouri GOP on Facebook. They can pressure him to quit:

Call MISSOURI GOP: 573-636-3146
Call Akin campaign: 636-207-7986
PERHAPS THE BEST NUMBER....THE WORK NUMBER OF THE ACTUAL STATE GOP CHAIRMAN David Cole.....THIS MAY BE MOST EFFECTIVE: (417) 847-2734
This man must drop out by the 22nd. Urgent doesn’t begin to do justice to this issue.
Contact the GOP chairman himself directly to pressure him to quit:
Workplace number of state GOP chairman (lawyer): 417-847-2734
His comments have NO BASIS IN SCIENCE. If a man ejaculates inside a woman, there’s a chance she’ll get pregnant, rape or not. He was reaching back and swinging from the realm of idiocy and hit a home run over the park.
To the contrary, you’ll see all sorts of doctors coming out in the media, calling this guy a fool, not to mention women who were left pregnant after being raped coming out of the woodwork, with GOP candidates all over the country being challenged on this topic thanks to this idiot.
EXIT:Discussion about the economy
ENTER:Discussion about rape and pregnancy
McCaskill supported this guy and put out ads backing him because she obviously knew a moron when she saw one.
Typically, a rape victim who reports the crime immediately is taken the hospital for a chain of evidence examination and is issued an abortifacent to prevent conception. This helps keep the stats for rape-related abortions very low.
Sometimes the victim is too traumatized to report the crime immediately (most rapes are perpetuated by someone the attacker knows, so a perceived sense of "shame" may keep them silent). Someone very close to me personally was raped by her boyfriend. When this young girl realized she was pregnant with her attacker's baby, she became suicidal. At that point, the whole ugly truth came out. This bright, brave, sweet young lady had irrevocably changed; some part of her was now permanently scarred. Unfortunately, it was a "he said/she said" in the eyes of the law.
She aborted, a decision that she now regrets deeply and one that weighs heavily on her heart. Put in context, however, she was young and in a fragile state. It was doubtful that she would have come through the pregnancy intact.
That was over 20 years ago, and while she is one of the strongest and hardest working women I know, every once in a while the trauma still impacts her in unusual ways.
The LSM likes to throw this out there, because it's the classic "gotcha" question. If you side with life, you look heartless. If you side with the rape victim, you look like a hypocrite. What he should have said was, "Rape is a horrible act of violence against anyone. Any victim should receive support, help, and encouragement while they go through the tremendous healing process. Hopefully, they will have enough support and strength to choose to not make an equally innocent baby another victim of the rapist's evil deeds."
Sometimes I wonder if many on our side wish to lose.
I can see how someone could believe that with a certant convolution of logic.
But I can’t see how anyone running for any office could not recognize that such a statement would killed them politically were it known and taken as it sounds from this bite.
Then we must make that case, we must prove it and do so more quickly and defectively than the democrats can lie.
Then we must make that case, we must prove it and do so more quickly and defectively than the democrats can lie.
A woman is capable of being fertilized only 3-6 days of a 30-day month
do d math.
Is it too late to remove him from the ballot?
What case? How do you argue against pure idiocy?
This guy stated the indefensible. He basically went out and stated that any woman who gets pregnant and claims rape is actually a liar and she wanted it.
How do you walk back from that? You don’t.
You apologize, and then the particular individual in question gets disowned, marginalized and forced to remove himself as a candidate.
They have until the 22nd. This is why it is pertinent to hammer the Missouri GOP on getting this political-suicide act off the ballot quickly.
