Some Seniors Worry Over Ryan Selection
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 12, 2012 | By ARIAN CAMPO-FLORES

The news that Mitt Romney picked Rep. Paul Ryan, who has suggested changing Medicare, as his running mate sparked worries over the weekend among some residents at the Stella Maris retirement community in Miami Beach—concerns that could reverberate among seniors nationwide.

Nancy Scarchilli, a 92-year-old registered Democrat who is undecided this year, said Medicare "just paid a beautiful penny for my hospitalization" for heart failure, adding that she likes the program "the way it is."

Gisela Adán, another resident of the Stella Maris retirement community, said Saturday she relies on Social Security and Medicare but was unfamiliar with the details of Mr. Ryan's proposals. Regardless, she said, "I vote only Republican," so whatever the party proposes "is fine with me."

"I think Romney should have picked someone more middle-of-the-road," said Manny Meland, an 82-year-old independent who lives in Miami Beach. "I don't want [politicians] to rule with ideology. That puts me off."

Mac Williams, a 62-year-old independent who receives Social Security and lives in New Port Richey, north of Tampa, was similarly turned off by Mr. Romney's choice. "Ryan is entirely too extreme," he said. "I think Romney blew his chance of winning over independents."

On Saturday morning, as the news of Mr. Romney's choice circulated, Mr. Williams stopped at an Obama campaign office in the area and volunteered to help with its phone-bank operation. He said he had already been wary of Mr. Romney. But, he added, that morning's announcement was "like the last nail in the coffin."

The Republican reform plan totally exempts anyone over the age of 55 from any changes. When President Obama promised Americans "if you like your plan, you can keep it" to push Obamacare, he didn't tell the truth. The Ryan plan explicitly, in black and white, protects current and soon-to-be seniors. No changes.

The Democrats are already cutting over $700 billion from Medicare to pay for Obamacare. The Obamacare plan puts a board in place that determines which seniors get care and how much. A total monetary decision. Some Democrats have said privately, "The more seniors that die due to lack of medical care will help solve the Social Security fund problem."

"Some seniors" say, "Apres moi, le deluge."

I wonder if these people were this self-centered their entire lives. It might explain why they're dependent on government in their old age: because they raised children who don't give a freep about them, perhaps with justification.

Exactly.

She says, gently polishing her Øbongo 2012 campaign button.

What about us who don’t want Medicare under any circumstances? What about our freedom?

And that message should be, “If we don’t stop Øbamacare and Øbomanomics dead in their tracks there will be no check for you”

They are adding so much strain to an already overloaded system callously in order to curry favor in the short-term and with complete disregard for the long-term.

How about this for a campaign slogan: “The system won’t last much longer - will you?”

As a “senior” I take great offense at many seniors who are nobama-idiots. I believe when they were younger they were asshat/moonbat idiots. Age does not necessarily impart wisdom.

“They are going to reform the program for people in their twenties because we have to.”

When will that be? I have been hearing that from the GOP candidates since the early 80s, lol. What happened between the years 2001-2006 when Repubs had more control of government? Expansion of entitlements, lol.

Face it, the population/electorate love the government taking care of them. Even in the private sector people want their loses subsidized. A fundamental change needs to take place first among the electorate before any political stooge will act.

I think the people in their fifties are too close to retirement to exclude from some form of Social Security.

This budget reality is so new to people, their habits are going to have to change and so long as the Democrats are saying taxing the rich is enough it isn’t going to happen.
There is going to have to be some form of transition or bridge. Three of my children are in their mid forties and not able to do much for their own retirment yet.

I’m 69 And will turn 70 in December. Speaking as an official oldster /Medicare/SS recipient who would have preferred to keep all the money that was extorted from him to support those two programs and invest it himself, I say Ryan is the best hope for all of us who are SS/MC beneficiaries to protect our benefits. Equally vital, some type of individual investment account/privatization must be adopted for both programs to make their beneficiaries secure in the future. Ryan definitely understands this and Romney has shown, by picking Ryan, that he probably understands this.

Quit listening to Dem lies and your worries will go away.

Nobody has proposed impacting current or near term Social Security or Medicare recipients.

I turn 59 next month, and enthusiastically endorse Ryan’s plan.

It beats the hell outta Obama’s death panels!
An insurance card is NOT “healthcare”!

Since the first election I paid attention to issues (Goldwater-Johnson) fixing Social Security seems to be high-lighted every four years. The Republicans say they want to fix it and the Democrats accuse them of wanting to destroy it. The leaders in both Parties don't seem to want to change this debate

The SS can is occasionally dusted off and duct taped up so that it can be kicked down the road a little further. Hope this time it's different but 12 elections make you mighty jaded.

Well; so 'right'. . .and hope Ryan knows 'that time IS of the essence'; as it takes time for 'folks' to get comfortable with a new idea - and hold it, till they vote. There is a 'sleep/creep/leap' modality; that the Left maximizes; and the 'Right' ignores.

Schedules for appearances are now being 'cast'. . .

September 11, 2001 happened. And 'feel good' prescriptions were part of the therapy for restoration of 'confidence' and our economy. Mistakes made? For certain; but the actual decline began 2007; when the Dems took total control of Congress; and the death per 'stranglehold' on America began in earnest.

“The Republicans are not going to eliminate your Social Security or Medicare.”

Zerocare has ALREADY looted Medicare to the tune of $750 Bil several days ago and no one says squat. Will also affect current Medicare senior services.
