Catholic Former Lt. Gov. backs same-sex marriage

BALTIMORE - One of Maryland's most recognizable yet seldom-seen politicians publicly entered the same-sex marriage debate Tuesday.

Former Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend made a rare public appearance to rally Catholics to uphold Maryland's same-sex marriage law at the polls. She urged Catholics, who are a major voting block, to buck church policy.

"I learned from the nuns to love one another and that that was the most important commandment," she said, finding a way to reconcile her Catholic faith with her support of the idea.

The daughter of civil rights stalwart Robert Kennedy said the law does gel with her faith.

"Marriage equality is really consistent -- deeply consistent -- with what the Catholic Church over 2,000 years has tried to teach," Kennedy Townsend said.

Nothing better than a Kennedy holding forth on marriage. And especially the dumb as a box of rocks KKT. (If anyone knows of video of her half time interview during the Ravens Super Bowl appearance several years ago I’d love a link for verification of her incoherent ramblings—”It was SO exciting! First they scored a FOOTBALL and then we scored a FOOTBALL.”)

“I learned from the nuns to love one another and that that was the most important commandment,” she said...”

Hmmm....

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they came up to him in a body, and one of them, an expert in the Law, put this test-question: “Master, what are we to consider the Law’s greatest commandment?”

Jesus answered him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’. This is the first and great commandment. And there is a second like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself’. The whole of the Law and the Prophets depends on these two commandments.” - Matt 22

Love God first, “with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind”. Only THEN is it acceptable to love your neighbor.

I learned from Nuns to watch one's thoughts and behavior for all kinds of sin, obey the Lord, and chastise the sinner, lest your and their eternal soul be in jeopardy.

This is the nonsense that happens when the bishops fail to do their duty.

Agreed. I don't know when it started, many say Vatican II, but Catholics have gone squishy on almost everything. What happened to the bloodthirsty Crusaders who ravaged the middle east in the name of Christ? Those are the Catholics with whom I want to associate!

Excommunication needs to come back IN FORCE. Want to be a Catholic? Follow the doctrine. There's no swaying from the Bible when it comes to fealty to Christ.

The kindest assumption would be that she is out of her mind.

Why is it that the catholic priest/bishops know full well the positions of these politicians and have proof via legislative record.....yet still administer the Holy elements to them during communion?

I’m puzzled.

Well, you have a number of choices in the matter, Cushing, Madeiros, or Law.

All failed to do their duties, in more ways than in just failing to deal, RCC-wise, with the Kennedys.

Dear Kathleen Kennedy:

First of all. The person taking communion is committing a sin (mortal at that). The Priest gives the person the freedom to commit the sin. We are a free country. Even free to commit sin.

Clergy is also obligated to treat the body and blood with the utmost respect.

There is a responsibility on both sides. If a priest knows full well the elements will be desecrated, he should withhold.

And heretics like this will remain in “good standing” with her “church.” Well, I can do without a “church” like that.

“Marriage equality is really consistent — deeply consistent — with what the Catholic Church over 2,000 years has tried to teach,” Kennedy Townsend said.

Now I myself am NOT Catholic, but I can still tell that
this statement is total absurdity. Whatever pronouncements that the Catholic Church has made on homosexuality over the last 2000 years, I am sure that NONE of them even mentioned the possibility of a man being wedded to another man or a woman to another woman.

If the Church condemns homosexuality and regards it as a sin, how in the world is marriage equality consistent with such teachings?

Thank you. Perfectly said.

Sorry to say they have made whole careers out of just basically desecrating the sacraments, mocking Holy Mother Church and profaning the faith in general as it served their purpose and their purse.

Say what you will, but Rose Kennedy was well catechized and quite devout, alone in her faith among the family, but for Eunice who also remained stubbornly prolife all her life. Both women were out of step with the times and their family. I pray for Rose and certainly Ted on occasion. A tragic family really, with influence unfortunately.

When referring to Kennedys and their religion, the word “Catholic” should always be placed in quotes.
