That was my first thought. There are more friendly-fire (and not-so-friendly fire) casualties in the Pentagon than out in the field.

Your comment echoes my experience. While I have never been in the military, I have worked with a LOT of ex-Navy officers and enlisted. I found the officers to fall into two categories: the extremely competent, and the politicians.

The extremely competent are the smartest, nicest, most conscientious people I have ever met. They got their advancement by being the best at what they did.

But they don’t advance as fast as the politicians. They know how to parrot the company line, no matter the obvious insanity/stupidity of it.
