A spokesperson for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has advised that the former Massachusetts governor disagrees with the Boy Scouts current policy prohibiting open homosexuals from serving as members and leaders.
According to The Associated Press, Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul told the news outlet in an email that Romney still stands by his beliefs that homosexual men should be able to serve in the organization. She specifically noted that Romney had outlined his views in 1994 during a political debate, and that his stance has not changed.
I support the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue, Romney stated during the debate. I feel that all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation.
As previously reported, last month, the Boy Scouts of America issued a statement reaffirming its policy prohibiting open homosexuals from joining the organization.
The committees work and conclusion is that this policy reflects the beliefs and perspectives of the BSAs members, thereby allowing Scouting to remain focused on its mission and the work it is doing to serve more youth, the statement said. The review included forthright and candid conversation and extensive research and evaluations both from within Scouting and from outside of the organization.
The decision to reiterate and reaffirm the Scouts current policy followed two years of deliberations from an eleven-member committee comprised of Boy Scout executives and other volunteers who represented a diversity of perspectives and opinions.
When all was said and done, the committee concluded that the restriction served as the best policy for the Boy Scouts.
The current policy reads, While the BSA does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA.
Mitt Romney also recently reiterated his support for homosexual adoption. This past May, in an interview with Neil Cavuto of Fox News, he explained that while he is against the concept of homosexual marriage, he does believe that homosexual couples should be able to adopt children.
[I]f two people of the same gender want to live together, want to have a loving relationship, or even to adopt a child, in my state, individuals of the same sex were able to adopt children. In my view, thats something that people have a right to do, Romney outlined. But, to call that marriage is something that in my view is a departure from the real meaning of that word.
He had first outlined his position on the matter in 1996 while talking to CNNs Wolf Blitzer.
Well, they are able to adopt children, he said. Im not going to change that.
Prior to Saul serving as Romneys press secretary, Richard Grenell, an open homosexual, filled the position.

Illinois....you have absolutely no reason to vote for Mitt Romney whether you vote for Goode or not.
Illinois is going Obama. You know it, I know it, the world knows it.
The only reason you have to vote for Romney would be support???
Which is more proof of the stupidity of ABO crowd, who are deluding themselves in thinking Romney can pressured to the right. It's not going to happen. He will be a disaster that will move the nation to the left and will cost Republicans the gains they made in 2010. It doesn't take a lot of brain power to comprehend that.
“No one, and I mean NO ONE, has the RIGHT to adopt a child. The ONLY one in an adoption with rights is the CHILD. It is the duty of the government to protect those rights. Please explain how this is done by purposefully denying a child either a mother or a father.”
Officially, the post of the decade.
No one, outside of Jesus Christ, could have put this any better.
All children deserve a mother and a father. Sadly, they end up with far less than half a loaf.
Cause I like Romney’s economic ideas.. Plus I despise 3rd parties.. I know he won’t win Illinois..
“the anti romney crowd is out in full force. I was STRONGLY against him during the primary but I am MORE strongly against Obama now...The whole point of this post is to bring down romney and support Obama - an obama troll?”
Yes, exactly. Obama’s Chicago operation: “Neutralize FreeRepublic” is in full force. I can’t believe they think we are falling for this. Only the feeble minded would think supporting Obama advances the cause of freedom. The last group to fall for that was the Ralph Nader voters in Florida that gave Bush the election in 2000 and Perot in ‘92. It will be a generation before either side falls for that lame trick again. Meanwhile we are powering by the lefties in the battle for the WH, Senate and House. That will cause the Pro-Obama trolls here to really start squealing. The farther they get behind the louder the will get.
This is one of the few places where some conservatives have figured out it is a bad idea to vote for a Republican that will move the nation to the left.
It took me voting for both Bushes before I figured that out. But, at least I did and I don't intend on voting from someone more dishonest and liberal than George W. Bush. It's political suicide.
The lesser of two evil strategy is absolutely moronic.
geez, not you again...
why dont you go to DUHmmieland for a while
Funny, he hasn't upheld that principle yet when it comes to Chick-fil-A's CEO's right to express his religious views without being discriminated against by the government.
Goode might very well decide the election in Virginia.
Due to that, he’ll be getting lots of press in the coming days. That will probably get his name on more ballots.
However, you are not entirely read into the process. The CP was on 40 ballots in the last election.
The process in states is different, but one can (1) get on the ballot, or (2) be an authorized write-in candidate. Those are separate items.
(2) is easier to achieve, so you can bet Goode will be available as either a name on the ballot or as a write-in candidate.
Wasn’t it Murkowski who proved the validity of a write-in campaign?
Santorum will be one of the prime time speakers at the convention. No Newt, no Palin, no Scott Walker, no Jim Demint.
And, the Democratic party will be doing the same if Romney gets into office. Romney is the key to Democrats regaining control of Congress and the majority of state legislatures.
I support the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue, Romney stated during the debate. I feel that all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation.
Essentially, he is saying he doesn't discriminate and BSA has the right of freedom of association and can decide its membership as it sees fit.
From a legal and traditional standpoint, he again isn't discriminating or favoring by saying that two consenting adults can enter into a legal contract to do something that isn't illegal.
And he's right that domestic partnerships aren't "marriage" and shouldn't be legally referred to as marriage as we traditionally, historically have defined marriage.
Based on these quotes, he's seems more of an advocate of the Bill of Rights, as far as that goes, and not so much a supporter of gay rights or someone pushing that agenda.
“Boy Scouts has always billed itself as a Christian organization.”
Sorry, not correct. The BSA is part of a movement started in 1907 in England called the World Scouting Movement.
Belief in God, a supreme being, is all that is required. In fact, atheists are not eligible to join. Agnostics, on the other hand, fill their ranks.
The BSA actually offers religious medals for Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Judiaism, Catholicism, and Protestant Christianity.
A Scout is Reverant, not necessarily Christian.
Why does this A$$hat keep loading on the obstacles to me voting for him? As I have posed repeatedly - my heart is very much against voting for Romney. I have been blasted for that viewpoint, being told basically that if I don’t vote for Romney, I am reelecting Obama...
And indeed, I have been holding my breath and waiting for the VP pick... but in the meantime, he piles on this crap...
And lest we forget - the LDS “church” (i.e.- Mormons) teach and preach against homosexuality... So it sounds kind of like Romney is about as much a practicing Mormon as Pelosi is a practicing Catholic... Only when it is convenient and politically expedient...
And next week, Romney’s campaign will release a plan for legalizing homosexual marriage across the nation... (I hope this is a joke).
We already know Romney is soft on abortion.
He is apparently soft on the homosexual issue
He hasn’t really put forward much on the whole illegal immigration debate (won’t be as big of an “issue” after Obama makes a couple million “legal” just before the election).
And of course - his record on socialized medicine... I don’t foresee him supporting a full repeal of ObamaCare. He can talk a big game - but his record speaks far louder.
With “news” like this - it is about time for the Freeper Romneybots and the others (ABO crowd in particular) to shut up.
He is the only one who can defeat Obama..and I want Obama GONE.
1. He will not change the tax system but will get rid of the "loophole" called "mortgage deduction". In other words, he will raise my taxes. And he found lots of those "loopholes" and "fees" to use when governor of Massachusetts.
2. Do you think he has said he will "repeal ObamaCare"? Not quite: specifically he has said "it's important for us to repeal and replace Obamacare". Get that...repeal AND replace. It's on his own website about 4 paragraphs down on this page: http://www.mittromney.com/blogs/mitts-view/2012/06/romney-i-will-repeal-obamacare
Gee, there aren't principled conservatives here out there that will condemn candidates of both parties for taking a liberal position?
We’re skrewed.
