When people such as Little Big Gulp Bloomberg propose some new nanny-state law, they often express the hope that it will become a model for the nation. But forget about aping sprawling metropolises such as the Big Apple or San Francisco if you want to increase public well-being. There is a better locality to copy: Kennesaw, Georgia.
I propose that we take one of its laws nationwide and require every law-abiding citizen to own a gun. After all, studies have shown that the deterrent criminals fear most is that of an armed prospective victim. And as the apocryphal saying goes, The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference.
Yet Ill go even further and propose that we also eliminate many of the gun-control laws in existence. And since they number in the thousands, it shouldnt be hard to pare them down by at least 50 percent. Isnt this the least we could do in the name of increasing freedom and peoples capacity to defend themselves?
Of course, I wouldnt expect the above to garner much support from the Left; in fact, Im sure theyd howl. So Ill tell you what, my liberal friends.

HAS any other county or city emmulated mandatory ownership?
Heck with that.
Kids should get firearms safety in kindergarten or first grade. “If you find an unattended firearm, don’t touch, leave the area, and tell an adult.” Followed by “When you handle a firearm, this is how you clear a gun.”
In elementary school and high school, they should have mandatory marksmanship training and pistol and rifle teams.
A couple of quotes from one of my favorite authors, Louis L’Amour:
From “The Lonesome Gods”:
“Our constitution provides that no law shall forbid us from keeping and bearing arms because of the necessity for a militia. We have a militia of a sort, but our greatest strength lies in the fact that so many of our people not only possess weapons but also understand their use, and above all they are prepared to defend themselves against any sudden attack by an enemy.
“You will remember that we won our freedom because we were armed. We were not a simple peasantry unused to weapons. The men who wrote our Constitution knew our people would be safe as long and they were armed.”
From North to the Rails:
Understand one thing You can make laws against weapons but they will be observed only by those who dont intend to use them anyway. The lawless can always smuggle or steal, or even make a gun. By refusing to wear a gun you allow the criminal to operate with impunity.
Goreville, IL did this back in 1982 after Morton Grove passed a handgun ban (since revoked, I believe).
Every resident must possess a handgun.
It was never enforced, or course. It was intended as a big FU to Morton Grove and, by extension, Northern (read:Chicago)Illinois.
God, I love it down here.
Being the sympathetic soul that I am, I felt it my civic duty to purchase a second Series 70 M-1911A1 and, in Gorevilles’ distinct honor, a parkerized Commander to boot.
See my reply above.
Force? No! Choice? Yes!
How about an annual payment for the purchase of a new gun or ammunition?
Oooh. I like the way this guy thinks.
Better: a tax credit. Put the grabbers on the defense for once.
Ping. You might appreciate how this guy thinks
Better idea: since folks who are armed pretty much take c are of themselves, waive the payment of state sales taxes for them, and let those who use the services so provided pay.
No personal weapon at time of sale, pay the tax. Armed, no tax. Simple.
