Democrats might have selected the keynote speaker at their convention to rally Latino voters, but the pick also illuminated the fact that as far as young Latino politicians go, the party doesnt have a very deep bench.
The Democratic National Convention Committee selected San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, 37whose twin brother, Joaquin, will almost certainly be elected to Congress from Texas in Novemberas its keynote speaker in Charlotte.
Though San Antonio has a population of 1.3 million, Castro is still a local officeholder. Compare that to the long list of nationally prominent Republican Latinos: Florida Senator and potential Romney running mate Marco Rubio; Republican Latino governors Susana Martinez of New Mexico and Brian Sandoval of Nevada; and Ted Cruz, a Latino Republican in Texas who is favored Tuesday to win a GOP runoff for a U.S. Senate seat. (The runoff winner also would be favored in the general election.)

Slimes fundraiser for the communist party?
Certainly wish that the Republican candidates would critique the patronizing demeaning position that Democrats have with minority immigrants. Those immigrants came here to participate in a vibrant productive free capitalist culture that afforded opportunity and a decent life for hard working people. They were often fleeing heavy handed socialist countries that promised virtually everything but delivered only poverty, a lack of opportunity and repression. The Democrats treat these immigrants like their little wards who will only prosper with their statist policies. In reality the Democrats once in power have stalled the American economy, inhibited vibrant creative productive capitalism with their restrictive rules, regulations, edicts and high taxes. They are turning America into the countries those brave immigrants fled.
Many people do not understand that the Latino vote is not monolithic. Florida had many Cuban refugees from the upper and middle classes who would have had a more conservative view of the world and a strong feeling of anti-communism. Both Texas and California have some old “Spanish” families who have lived there for generations. Then of course there are the many more recent arrivals who tend to have more populist social values. When Puerto Ricans vote, there is a three way split of mind set among those who favor statehood, or independence, or continuation of the status quo. So no generalizations are necessarily valid.
They also tend to be Catholic. That's part of what sunk "gay marriage" in CA.
not bad for a guy whose single Mom was a La Raza activist way back when.. here’s hoping he don’t get Reconquista fever..
Ain’t really no such thing as a mainstream politician who is a Democrat.
