GM Invests $600 Million in English Soccer Team
Breitbart ^ | 7/30/12 | Mike Flynn

Yes, General Motors really is giving $600 million to an English soccer club. Actually, as the team involved, Manchester United, is the most valuable team in sports, an investment in the club wouldn't be a bad idea, considering how everything else is going at General Motors. No, the $600 million GM is giving to Man United over the next 7 years is a sponsorship deal. In return, Man United will wear "Chevrolet" on their jerseys and GM will be able to call itself Man United's "global automobile partner." It will immediately have the edge with all those consumers who look to their favorite soccer club for car buying advice.

There is a very good reason government shouldn't bailout failing companies with buckets of taxpayer money. The money simply allows them to keep on making the disastrous decisions that got them to be a failing company in the first place. At least straight-up bankruptcy would have probably rooted out the kind of people who would think spending $60-70 million a year to have your logo on a soccer jersey was a swell idea.

Well.... personally, I’d rather sponsor Man Utd than own a Chevrolet.

Things lead me to a Jeep Wrangler or a Ram.

That's the way it is.

‘Patriots’ who call fellow Americans cowards because they don’t buy American cars and trucks should read this article then do us all a favor by putting a rifle under their chin.

I'm thinking Japanese or German. If possible, made in the USA by non-union peeps.

Actually, even though I really need a new car (my current one is 13 yrs old), I will wait until after the election. If Romney wins, I'll buy a car. If Obama is somehow credited with a win, probably not. Because of the ACA, I would need to save $$$ in case I ever need a future medical procedure or surgery (there will be offshore alternatives, perhaps even med cruise ships.)

That's the beauty of freedom of choice, my FRiend.

BTW (and I'm willing to be corrected by the auto experts hereabouts) my impression is that if you buy Chrysler product, be sure to get the extended warranty and get a reliable roadside assistance service.

Just sayin'.

Search VIN country code for others.

Just why is GM promoting a brand they don’t market to any significant extent in the UK?

$600 million invested in Man U!! As if that club needs any help, they are the NY Yankees of premier league football. City is a filthy rich club too. That money would have been better spent at Sunderland.

The Japanese called this sort of thing “zaiteku,” a contraction of “zaimu tekunorojii,” or financial technology. They thought they were very clever until the stock market tanked, and it came out that many companies were heavily invested in things as frivolous as ridiculously inflated memberships at golf courses.

A lot of companies went under, and the ones that had not engaged in zaiteku had the last laugh.

Go, government motors. It looks good now, but it will bite you on the tailpipe eventually.

it doesn’t matter how much money you throw at marketing a dud, its not going to sell. It may fool some first buyers, but not for long

exactly - Im done with American auto's and the UAW

Many other brands are made here in the States and employ hard working Americans....and frankly have a better fit and finish than seen by some union thugs, intent on the next bong session in the company parking lot at lunch

GM do market Chevrolet quite hard in the UK, but it might not be what you associate Chevrolet with, it’s a budget competitor here fighting it out with the Koreans at the cheap and not so cheerful end of the market:

They do sell the Camaro over here but unfortunately they refuse to put the steering wheel on the correct side and we’re not willing to sit on the french side of the car like Americans are! :D

“Makes sense, Gummit Motors sponsoring a commie sport. Must be nice not to have to pay taxes.

Pray for America”

Commie sport? I genuinely laughed out loud at that! :)

It’s a bit of a stretch to call a football club that turns over 75m and clears 30m in profit communist! And those figures are in pounds, which are signifcantly more valuable than dollars! :D

On a more serious point though, how do they get away with it? If they were 100% privately funded and profitable I could understand it, but haven’t they been bailed out?

The other odd thing is that the main GM brand in the UK is Vauxhall, Chevrolet being the cheap ‘n cheerful brand so this sponsorship is competing with itself really.
