Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

If Palin hadn’t been kept on such a short leash, she would have made the election results much closer. She was forbidden from coming out fighting. It’s like the GOP didn’t want to win.
I’d like to find out the politics of the person who donated Cheney’s hearts. Wonder if he was a bleeding heart libtard.
Considering all that the last few years of Bush-Cheney did to contribute in ushering in Obama in the first place, it’s quite a laugh for Cheney to make this contention.
Oh, and right before the convention, this is they way to bring things together, by taking a gratuitous swipe at Palin? I’m to the point where the whole damned GOP can go eat a bowl of ground-up glass. I’ve watched and looked forward to every Republican convention on tv since 1976, and voted exclusively for the ticket my whole life, always believing I had a pretty strong ideological kinship going on. But g-ddam these bastards always piling onto Palin, who was the only reason I was remotely excited about voting in 2008. They attack her, they attack me and everything I stand for. The damn GOP can just go burn in hell!! That includes you, Cheney.
Doesn’t matter who Romney picks, they will demonize the choice.
Palin, Quayle, Agnew, Nixon, and yes, you too, Mr. Cheney, were mocked and vilified as VPs
I believe has similar feelings about Obama, and if his thinking is that newcomers should not run for president or vice president, I wish he would have included that in his statement. He is wise enough to know how this will be used in the media. It is a reasonable belief that we want people with complete records and experience on the national stage as candidates and elected presidents. If he meant to single out only Palin, shame on him and I too question his decision capabilities.
C,mon Cheney
It wasnt about her “background”
She scared the hell out of the liberal establishment and that includes RINOs)
Why? Downs baby on her hip perhaps? A living rebuke to modern amoral culture
Dick Cheney is a national treasure. Don’t agree with him on this, but he is still in the tops in my book.
He’s right! They should have put PALIN AT THE TOP OF THE TICKET!!!
Cheney is GOP-e so no surprise here.
BTW Dick, what did you and Bush do to impede the spending orgy by Reid and Pelosi?
What did you do to stop the CRA?
What did yo do to stop the reckless spending by Hastert and the RINO’s?
Why did you put the Medicare Drug entitlement in place when the country has an entitlement tsunami coming towards us?
Why expend the Education Dept with no child left behind?
Why didn’t you go for real entitlement reform for SS and Medicare?
Instead of a temp tax cut which the dems play politics with why not a Flat tax?
Good job in the WOT but for the rest you and Bush suck, go away and take the Bush family and Rove with you.
Dick is great patriot and was the best VP ever. But I don't think he realizes that many of us feel like we don't need someone that has experience running the federal government. We need people that can begin to roll the government back towards it's mandated functions.
At this point the government is so large that nobody can control it.
It literally functions as a league of sovereign agencies manned by faceless bureaucrats who take reams of laws and decisions from courts, committees, czars, and interprets them as they see fit.
They all have their own PR divisions and lawyers to sue, leak information, or generate mountains of biased statistical reports to defend their priorities.
Agree. Cheney is a Bush Acolyte, Chicken Hawk, and Gay Marriage Supporter.
Good question.
