I don’t get it. If the opening ceremony could be meaningfully viewed by a person sitting in a seat in the stands, why couldn’t NBC provide a meaningful live production? I guess they felt like there was just too much going on and too many editorial judgements to make on the fly, like which camera angle to use and that sort of thing. But the ceremy was surely so scripted that all could have been mapped out in advance. So I don’t know...there must be more to the story.
Speaking for myself — I am totally incapable of understanding anything I see on TV unless Matt Lauer explains it to me. From the Rose Parade to the Olympics, Matt helps me understand the world and all the things I see in it. He even tells me what flavor kool-aid to drink.
