Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has emerged as one of three Republican officeholders who political handicappers say have the most potential to unify the party and boost the fortunes of GOP standard-bearer Mitt Romney as a running mate in November.
While Mr. Romney has revealed little about his vice-presidential search, Mr. McDonnell, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are widely seen as reliable economic and social conservatives at a time when the party faces the possibility of factional divisions heading into next months convention in Tampa, Fla.
The Virginia governor, experienced analysts note, is a staunchly pro-life Catholic with a fiscally conservative reputation and no known opposition among evangelicals, whose votes have been vital to GOP electoral success and many of whom are skeptical about Mr. Romneys Mormon religion.
The Virginia governor is considered a competent, and at times engaging, speaker not likely to upstage Mr. Romney unlike, say, more charismatic figures such as Mr. Rubio or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

By the way, FR is a pro-God, pro-life, pro-small government grassroots conservative site. We are not a liberal debating society. We already know where we stand on the issues and our conservative principles are non-negotiable and not subject to compromise, not subject to debate. You’re either a conservative or you are not. Romney is a leftist scumbag!!
“If Romney cant win Virgina without picking a favorite son, hes not going to win the election anyway.”
Pretty much my view too. Though Goode, whom the Green Party is working hard to get on the ballot here, may draw 1 to 2%- which may be enough to win Va for Obama.
Much better to het someone from a real swing state who could carry it, though I don’t know of such a person.
Cuccinelli would be a good choice from Va if Mitt decides to change his present plans and go for the conservative vote.
“A real Conservative does not suggest someone stop posting if they dont like the direction this forum is going. A real Conservative appreciates the First Amendment.”
Jim Robinson owns this forum, it is not a public forum. He determines what can or cannot be said here, and more or less the direction of the forum. The “First Ammendment” doesn’t apply. A real conservative “respects” private property. On private property, the first ammendment doesn’t apply. IF I own that property and I don’t like want you say, I can lawfully and rightfully tell you to go elsewhere. So, son, get a clue. Jim Robinson has called FR the home of the resistance.
Romney is scum - his record is clear. Jim Robinson has more directly addressed that than I can or will attempt. He has been crystal clear that there is “no lesser of two evils” in comparing Obama & Romney.
Jim Robinson has created a truce, as I understand it, to allow ABO views to be expressed. However, I do not believe that truce extends to pro-Romney posts (no matter how much the poster disclaims it is “reluctant”). Of course, that is for Jim Robinson to determine - not me.
Now for my opinion. I don’t believe that persons that can’t get on board with “no Obama or Romney” stop disrupting things here by posting anything remotely pro-Romney. Blast Obama please, but stay away from promoting Romney as a viable alternative. Saying you fear Obama having four more years and you therefore will hold your nose and vote for Romney is one thing, but basically saying, “he wasn’t my choice but Romney is OK” is entirely different. That, IMO, goes beyond a truce with a pure ABO position to bordering on being a de facto Romneybot (disclaimers notwithstanding).
Romney support has no place on FR....IF I am understanding Jim Robinson correctly.
We have ‘middle of the road’ serving conservatives in Va. They often start out ‘movement’ conservatives, but then hit the middle road. Don;t know why that is.
In fact our liberals are ‘middle of the road ‘ too!
That’s why Kaine will lose the Senate race to Allen.
“I’ll vote for a Republican when they actually run one. Voting straight conservative here. Romney is...the problem!”
I can’t believe that something so obvious just became apparent to me. Many of these ABO posters are actually Republican Party Loyalists. If someone has an (R) by their name, they will vote for them. Talk like, “well Romney wasn’t my first, second, or third choice, but he won the nomination, so we must support him.” To me, before the primaries started, Romney was NEVER a choice. Stealing a primary by hook and crook does not get me to vote for someone. They have to earn it by words and deeds. Romney waffles on his words, and his past deeds are scary.
Repbulican “Loyalists” aren’t trully conservative.

Technically your argument is not on very solid ground. On my private property, I don’t take donations to keep it up. Yes, Jim owns the website, that’s a given, but it’s a public forum, paid for with donations. Not exactly the pinnacle of private property. Also, the First Amendment does not prevent me from saying my piece on your property. Property rights prevent me from going on your property. But if I’m at your house, you do not have the right to shut me up. Simply to ask me to leave. Big difference. If Jim wishes that I leave, all he has to do is say so, and I will depart.

You seem to like to speak for him a lot though. So evidently you are trying to determine anyway.

So what would you suggest? A viable alternative is an alternative that has a shot at unseating Obama. A third party candidate, especially one who is not on the ballot in all 50 states, is not viable by any stretch of the imagination. That is nothing but a temper tantrum vote throwing yourself on the floor because your guy didn’t win the primary. Writing in Palin? If she didn’t have the guts to throw her hat into the ring, then she’s not worthy of a write in vote (by the way, she’s an ABO herself). So, tell me oh self righteous one...what is your viable alternative?
And people who would assist Obama to gain a second term probably aren't truly conservative, either.
KMA, troll.
The GOP-e doesn't care for guys like that.
JR put up a “truce thread.”
Suggest you read it.
Jim Webb, who ustakinda be a Republican ~ almost a Conservative Republican, ran as a Democrat for the Senate and won.
Parts of Virginia where they still pray for the quick return of the Confederacy turned out to vote in vast numbers for Webb. He also got the black vote. Rational people voted for his opponent, but Webb won.
I can bring out the "Oh, no, say it's not so" crowd by referring to Webb having been put into office by KuKluxers ~ who usually don't vote here and haven't for the last 3/4 of a century. But that's how it happened. They don't vote for Conservatives so if you want the KuKlux vote you have to go for the middle!
Webb had no couth so he did. You should have seen McAuliffe try the same trick with the Democrat Gubernatorial primary just 3 years ago. He was pitiful, but he wanted that same margin of victory Webb got.
I think sometimes Mc Donnell thinks those guys will vote for a Republican if he can stir their interests in removing the heavy hand of government from liquor sales!
I"m sure he's figured that out by now ~ they want their likker, but they ain't votin' fo' no gol darned Republican.
Over on the other side, balancing all that bit of craziness, we have Doug Wilder. He's a black man, but as I saw several decades back, if he'd been a white man in Ohio or Indiana he'd been a Republican!
Doug has his own faction and can throw an election one way or the other if he wants to. I think Obama has him convinced that it's time to get him out of government but the Republicans threw him a curve with this Romney thing.
Some Mittbots claim Wilder is coming their way, but now that he's seen that the real Conservatives are not simply going along with Romney, he hasn't made a move.
We'll see
I think it's possible for a real Conservative Republican to win office in Virginia but he'll lose Tidewater and Northern Virginia if he trashes federal government employees ~ an habit these guys fall into ~ but something you really can't get away with in Virginia if you want to win.
And that was a good thing. The man has more baggage than the Gabor sisters would take on a round the world cruise.
Every day we would be inundated with a new skeleton from the Newtist closet. We'd be on defense more that the Cincinnati Bungals.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!! ;)
Theory meets Brute Reality. Reality wins. Thank you, Jim. ;)
Speaking as a Virginian, he would cause more harm than gain to the willard ticket in VA. “Tollbooth Bob” as he’s come to be known is generally competent but dull. And picking him would effectively kiss-off Hampton Roads which is actually the swing region of the Commonwealth. West and central VA are conservative, north is hard left, and east (Hampton Roads) goes whichever way the wind is blowing. And they are heap PO’d at him right now over the tolls.
(For the VA challenged, Hampton Roads is surrounded by water. It lives and dies by it’s bridges and tunnels. Tollbooth Bob cut a deal that will result in tolls on almost all of them. It was a major screw over for the region).
Then there is that little issue of having only 2 names on the VA presidential primary ballot.
All that said, I hope willard picks him. It will increase Virgil Goode’s share of the vote.
Another Mittens defender withers under the gaze of The Man Himself.
Then neither Romney nor Obama get a majority and this goes to the House ~ where Virgil can be selected to be President.
You heard it here first (Or more likely lebenteengazillionth)
“That would be great! I live in NJ, not VA, but I have followed McDonnell. He would be an asset to the ticket.”
But not in his home state.
“They are underwater bridges across a major seaport, do you think they should be free?”
The folks in Hampton Roads pay gasoline and income taxes, too. Lots and lots of them. Be that as it may, I agree with you in theory: I generally prefer user fees to taxes.
The problem is that Hampton Roads is solidly against the tolls. And they identify Tollbooth Bob as the culprit.
“The solution is for everybody in Virginia to vote for Virgil and give him a pile of electoral votes.”
I like the way you think. I’m voting for him anyway, but that’s an interesting idea.
That would get those guys off their tails.
