Is it possible that Mitt is an inexperienced and undisciplined candidate, or should we begin viewing his comments as trial balloons?
The latest possible trial balloon came this past Monday in an interview with Larry Kudlow. In that discussion, Romney relates the situation in Aurora, Colorado to his time in Massachusetts when he was able to ban weapons such as the AR15, one of America's favorite sporting rifles.
Romney...the law that we signed in Massachusetts was a combination of efforts both on the part of those that were for additional gun rights and those that opposed gun rights,...Where there are opportunities for people of reasonable minds to come together and find common ground, thats the kind of legislation I like. (http://www.nbcuniversal.presscentre.com/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=11599&NewsAreaId=2)
Romney has given us other trial balloons in recent months.
First, he consistently affirms RomneyCare, the massive government intrusion into healthcare that was the blueprint for Obama's massive government intrusion into healthcare. Sadly, Romney's health care plan included many items absolutely unacceptable to social conservatives. His continuing support for his program has many conservatives legitimately wondering if he intends merely to "fix" ObamaCare. Perhaps he thinks it would be better if just a little more in his own image.
Next, and only this past April, was Mitt Romney's support for gay couples. Compounding that problem was his assertion that gay couples should be allowed to adopt children. There are compounding problems with that, too. Mitt Romney has long had a special relationship with the gay-agenda wing of both parties. He has in the past given those advocates special assurances that he is the man they want in office. Just this past week, when Obama permitted military uniforms to be worn in a gay pride parade, there was no protest from Mitt Romney that this author can find. (Since pro-life chaplains can't march in pro-life parades in uniform, one wonders at the double standard.) To cap this off, during the debates, Romney indicated he was just fine with permitting open homosexuality in our military.
Now we have the governor who instituted strict gun control on "offensive weapons" reaffirming that decision. But that is not the critical part of the message.
Mitt Romney actually said on Monday -- this past Monday -- that when he can get legislators to agree on gun control, then "that's the kind of legislation I like."!
I can't help but dissect "that's the kind of legislation I like." What does that mean? Does it mean he's all in favor of signing gun control legislation if he can get legislators to originate it? That way, of course, he wouldn't be the only one taking the heat.
Does that mean that he doesn't really have a core value opposing gun control, that he'll sign on if he's not the only one with his neck on the line?
Trial Balloon or undisciplined comment?
You be the judge. But, you also better be careful, and make sure Romney never has a large enough group of RINOs to team with democrats to bring him gun control legislation.
After all, "That's the kind of legislation I like."
“Remember folks, while Romney is not our FRiend, the media would love nothing more than to divide us and keep Obama in office.”
We’re already divided and we already lost this presidential election. In my view, we lost it the day Sarah decided not to run. I’m voting third party because I refuse to waste my vote on a socialist.
There are still plenty of good conservatives to vote for in state and local races, and a few for Congress.
Great work. “You’re An Obama Supporter” posters coming in 3..2..1..
Thanks, EV...for the support and for the quote.
While sad, that about sums it up. My response elsewhere to the “they’re two sides of the same coin” statements is usually, “Well, voting Republican allows me to be better armed and keep more of my s*** for when the wheels fall off”... (’Cause they’re gonna fall off without a doubt unless they chop about 50% of government spending yesterday.)
Unfortunately, we are stuck with this moron. The only alternative is four more years of the Marxist Muslim which is infinitely WORSE.
Its nice the GOP doesn’t own your vote. But like it or not, its the only other game in town. If we can’t take the GOP over from within - BOTTOM UP - what makes you think we can be successful with a new party? This isn’t the 1800s.
If you REALLY care about all this mess and REALLY want to do something aout it, I have some suggestions:
1) Register with the GOP and run for County Committee positions. They are low on the radar screen, frequently go unfilled, yet can exert SIGNIFICANT political power.
2) Find CONSERVATIVE GOP candidates who are running for office and support them in phone banks, with money and other volunteer activities.
3) WRITE, E-MAIL and CALL your legislators - ALL of them and defend conservative views.
4) Start filling public information requests on the activites of local and state government and - ESPECIALLY - the school systems.
5) FIND OUT what the schools are teaching students in your area on western civiliation, Amrican History, Civics and Islam. By molding future generations, the educational Marxists are creating generations of dumbed-down Americans who are ignorant of America’s UNIQUENESS as a bastion of REAL Freedom and Liberty in history.
6) ORGANIZE. Get as many like minded people as possible who think like you and me to do the above and following.
7) SEND LETTERS to the local newspapers. Get involved in intelligent and CIVIL debates with the opposition.
8) CONTRIBUTE to local conervatives and congressmen.
9) FIGHT THESE PEOPLE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.
THEN, we might have a better chance of exerting leverage on Romney and holding his feet to the fire if he gets elected. If not, it will help to bolster conservative opposition to Obama.
“The best thing for the second amendment is to maintain the status quo.”
Until the three radicalized Obama SupremeCourt Justices, vote away even more 2nd Amendment rights, not to mention solidifying abortion rights and denying more religious rights.
I don't know. Maybe they decided a Colonel and a Chaplain are more heat than they can handle.
LOL!

GET ACTIVE in BOYCOTTING these vendors who OPPOSE what we believe in!! SUPPORT THOSE VENDORS WHO DO!!!!! GET OTHERS TO DO SO!!
I would like FreeRepublic to create a list of those companies which support America and its values and those which do not to serve ass a GUIDE to the membership and conservative public viewers. TOGETHER with the REASONS for supporting or boycotting them.
Absolutely! I have never and will never ask anyone to vote for Romney just because he has an R by his name.
He is a politician.....our version of Bill Clinton (without the sex drive) that says whatever he feels will make him popular. So he sends a mixed message on the Second Amendment that gives both sides something and both sides nothing at the same time.
He will say just about anything to get elected.
I have no delusions on what I’m getting with Romney. I have to choose between that and some cancerous psychotic fascist who if elected again, will probably start a civil war and try and hunt my family down to a mass grave somewhere in an open field.
This isn’t the choice of a lesser of two evils, this is a choice of surviving v. likely not the next 4 years.
It is still obvious that he will be an improvement over Obama. Romney is not ideologically committed to progressivism.
Well, I hope you’re happy with the Marxist Muslim.
He’s the only other horse in the race.
I thought Romney was going to bowl Obama over like nuthin.
Guess that’s all democrat style propaganda.
Bigot: "One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ."
Having a devoted love of country and not wanting to see it converted to some 3rd world, Socialist/Communist/Islamic hellholle (and taking to task those who appear willing to let this happen, for whatever reason) can hardly be considered "Bigotry."
That is something we all expect the Left's use of "Alinsky Tactics" (especially Rule No 5: Using "Ridicule") and not what one expects from a fellow Freeper.
OK, what else would you refer to "it" (Hatred) for all those who keep pounding Mittens and suggesting he is more eeevil, dangerous and more of a "Threat" than is Dear Leader in spite of not being able to produce a shred of evidence whereby Mitt has ever attacked our Constitution, shown any HATRED (or gone on an "apology tour") toward our Republic; has aligend himself with our sworn enmies, and worked diligently to affect "change" which is code word for harming, if not "DESTROYING" our Republic as we know it?
Of course if you or any of your fellow Mitt/Mormon haters can produce same, I'll gladly reconsider my intent on voting for the lesser of 2 evils.
Conservative Vermont Vet went bye-bye...
If Mittens wins, there will be a lot of people (and many freepers) with buyer’s remorse.
Conservative does not = Republican. Quite the opposite anymore. The GOP doesn’t want conservatives, they LOATHE us, and then expect us to vote. I’ve left the GOP over Mitt. It is time to let them die a painful death and start a party where conservatives are welcome.
The GOP is like the date rapist who asks you out again after he rapes you. I’m tired of being raped politically.
“Heading towards the cliff at 45 vs 90 miles per hour gives me more time to stock up on ammo and implements of survival.”
Actually, I fear it simply gives the tyrants more time to take them from you.
