Deadspin ^ | July 22, 2012 | Sean Newell

Posted on 07/22/2012 8:32:31 AM PDT by John W

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. in Indianapolis, the NCAA will reportedly announce how it intends to punish Penn State following its handling of the the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The penalties have been termed "unprecedented" and will be leveled at both the school itself and the football program.

According to Armen Keteyian, a source had "never seen anything like it."

Things are happening quickly, now.

“Then why are recruiting violations punished so severely? They usually only involve a few players, coaches and alumni.”

Recruiting violations do not result in life sentences in prison. This is criminal activity and it should be treated that way.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Recruiting violations are controlled because to let them continue will give a school that cheats an unfair advantage.

I don’t want to defend the past actions of the NCAA. I am sure they have made mistakes. This is a criminal activity. Go after the people who were responsible.

Go after the staff at the school. Find other schools for the football team and close down their program. It’s not the kids fault. They will lose millions by not having a football program and it serves them right. But again, help the kids out of this mess.

Possibly they’ll claim by not exposing this and keeping it a secret the university avoided football program-related effects from such a scandal for many years.

Penn State Athletics, and the Administration, and the Town of State College, covered up these crimes, because they were afraid it would effect the CASH FLOW brought in by the football program.

The ONLY solution is to kill the Football Program for a LONG TIME, to send a strong message to ALL of the parties involved.

There are criminal prosecutions, in fact. I don’t follow the logic that the existence of criminal prosecutions should somehow excuse the program from ncaa violations.

Homos’ bring down a great school, very sad. Hope the penlites are aimed at the entire school/athletic department and not just the football team. Total NCAA ban for 5 years, all sports, womens too. Penn State will never recover from this scandal I would not be surprised if it was booted from its conference.

My guess: nothing. The Lsisterhood” is very powerful and Title IX assures the continuation of women’s sports, with a disproportinate number of lesbian coaches.

I served as an ROTC instructor at a Southeastern Conference school in the mid/late 1990s. While I was on staff, the university fired its women’s softball coach for sleeping with her players. Reportedly, she recruited the type of girls she “kiked,” explaining why her teams were so bad.

The university fired her (for obvious reasons) and she counter-sue for wrongful termination. Guess who won?

I concur with this assessment. The university's response to this entire event from day one has made me sick. It seems to me like they don't even really care about what happened at all.

“The NCAA is there to provide for fairness, not criminality.’

There is some justification for the NCAA to intervene here I would argue. Sandusky was good at what he did. But they knew he was a perv. Covering up his deviancy to keep utilizing his services means they were criminally negligent to retain a competitive advantage.

Really two issues: One is Penn State, the other is college football.

The Penn State side of the issue is fundamentally the same as any other non conformance with significant rules regulating conduct in order to enhance the competitive capability of the football program. When the non compliance is serious, so is the penalty; when non compliance is very serious, the death penalty is imposed.

This is the classic death penalty case. For the reason that the violation involved not only one or two people making bad decisions but rather a number of individuals, both within the football program and in the University Administration.

And in this case, unlike other institutional sports violations, a bunch of young men were really injured for life.

In fact, the most serious violation, involves people in the college administration who knew and did not act. Much like the Southern Methodist death penalty case some years ago. I don't really see any reason Penn State should not get the death penalty for all sports.

There really isn't any reason for the Colleges and Universities to be in the professional entertainment business at all. In theory, some of the top programs make a profit. In fact, a careful forensic accounting would demonstrate that most university's lose money on sports entertainment program and many of them lose a significant amount.

And the sports focus deteriorates from the primary mission of education. Under circumstances where most schools, particularly the football factories, are doing a really poor job in the education environment.

And the young people who are involved as actors are being exploited. Although in theory, they get an education, facts are that the programs exist only for the purpose of enhancing the program and the people who run it; so when the performer is no longer useful to the program, the education is also over. Scholarships for fifth year players who were unable to obtain their degree in four years because of the demands of the program are routinely cut off.

It is really time to bring an end to intercollegiate athletics.

I fail to see how mass punishment of university faculty and students, sanctions against entire sports programs, that had nothing to do with Sandusky and his cabal of enablers, “teaches” anyone anything.

It shows them how far they can fall if not vigilant. They'll be much more wary of who they associate with for the rest of their lives.

According to an article by a Penn State Alumnus on the board of trustees, that is where the problem lies. About 20 members of the board but run by a core group of 4 or 5 who rule absolutely! It always pays to look at the culture that is created by the top. The US Government is a good example. The president is a lie himself and has installed a group of liars and incompetents in his cabinet.

The “czars” are more of the same.

I agree. The NCAA gave SMU football the death penalty for paying their athletes back in the 80’s. What the people who ran the PSU program did was much worse. I believe they should be shut down. Sandusky was caught in the act by a janitor a few years ago, I think that pretty much everybody in that program knew about what he was doing. The players should be allowed to transfer with no penalty but I think the program should be shut down and when it is eventually restarted nobody from the staff of the current program should be allowed to work there.

Over 90% of the people who will be affected by bringing down Penn State athletics had nothing with Jerry Sandusky and didn’t even know Jerry Sandusky.

More like 99.99% of the people being punished were innocent. Really, only a handful of PSU officials (and maybe some from his charity) really knew about Sandusky.

If they institute a death penalty, it will be more about making a graphic example of PSU (to discourage other schools) vs. punishing the guilty.
