Why DID Campbell switch? He wasn’t a 100% liberal but that’s got to be one of the most surprising party switches ever.
Campbell was supposedly having problems with other CO Democrats that seemed to stem from his upset primary victory in 1992. I seem to recall as well that he cited his jewelry-making business (that he was penalized for maintaining it while those members “writing” books on the side were not). The final straw was his anger over the Dems opposing the balanced budget amendment.
It was interesting that Barone speculated that Campbell was going to exit the Senate after a term and run for Governor back in 1998 (which never happened). Of course, given the disaster that Bill Owens turned out to be (after initially looking like he was future Presidential material), Campbell might not’ve been necessarily any worse. Of course, Campbell is one of the few pols whose voting record improved with time in DC.
