Denver shooting suspect James Holmes purchased some 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet before carrying out hismassacre at a midnight screening of Batman.
The ammunition was part of a massive arsenal he gathered in the run-up to the killings, which also included four guns legally purchased at local gun shops.
His weapons were two Glock pistols, a 12-guage shotgun, and a high-powered AR-15 assault rifle fitted with a drum magazine allowing a fire rate of 50 to 60 rounds per minute.
Dan Oates, the chief of police in Aurora, Colorado, where Holmes killed 12 people and injured 58 others, said: He purchased four guns at local gun shops and through the internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, more than 3,000 rounds of 0.223 ammunition for the assault rifle, 3,000 rounds of 0.40 caliber ammunition for the two Glocks in his possession, and 300 rounds for the 12 gauge shotgun.
Also through the internet he purchased multiple magazines for the 0.223 caliber assault rifle including one 100-round drum magazine which was recovered from the scene.
Even if it was semi-automatic Im told by experts that with that drum magazine he could have got off 50 to 60 rounds within a minute. As far as we know it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in the theatre.
My understanding is that all the weapons he possessed, he possessed legally and all the clips that he possessed, he possessed legally and all the ammunition he possessed, he possessed legally.
Holmes is also believed to have joined a casual sex website where he apparently hinted at his plans for his killing spree, asking potential suitors: Will you visit me in prison?

Who’d a thought that being a student would pay so well? That’s some expensive artillery.
Just needed some Second Amendment folks in the theater, imho.
Where is the “massive arsenal”? That sounds like what is normally in my trunk on any given day.
I’m not accepting this story at face value. There are too many oddities.
“You have the right person.” - Mom Holmes
>>through the internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition,
So what? If I hadn’t lost all my guns, magazines, and ammo in a boating accident two years ago, I’d have more ammo than that.
hehe
My FIL misplaces that many of his guns and ammo EVERY MONTH!
They forgot the bic pen converted to a spitball gun.
Yah beat me to it. Great minds and all that rot. lol
Was thinking the same thing. How does a student manage to come up with the loot to buy all that hardware and don't know what kind of car he was driving, but it was not a Klunker either?
Financial Aid and Student Loans?
Even then, when I was in college (having availed myself to both as well as working 2 jobs and that was many moons ago) I was not exactly rolling in it and lived very frugally.
Steer Manure.
He didnt have a “massive” arsenal. He had a FEW firearms. A couple of handguns, a rifle and a shot gun. Everyone of my friends is similarly equipped, several times over.
6,000 rounds is possibly adequate for a summar of training for a father and son. Given the fluctuation in ammo pricing thanks to O, one buys when the price is right. That reminds me: i am getting low on 5.56 NATO.
My thoughts too. He was unemployed receiving unemployment payments. How could he afford so much ammo and so many fine weapons? AR-15s ain't cheap.
So how is Colorado supposed to “tighten” gun laws?
Refuse gun or ammo sales to 24 year old medical students with no police record? He obviously took advantage of existing laws.
So what new laws would have stymied a closet perv psycho with mass murder plans?
My question still is WEAPONS TRAINING.
He HAD to have gotten it, at some point in his life
Especially when you buy it at Gander Mtn.
Who says he paid for it? If he ordered by credit card knowing what he was going to do, how’re the card companies going to collect?
Excellent point.
Someone has already pointed out that his meek surrender seems very odd after shooting 71 people. A lot of valid questions are going unanswered and something is VERY strange about all of this.
Massive arsenal??????????????4 weapons???????????????
You know that’s what I would like to know, if this kid was out of work or was working part time at McDonald’s where did he get the money? That just doesn’t seem right, at all.
Anyone hear about the Ft. Hood shooter lately? Murdered people several years ago in an action of domestic Islamic terrorism, killed a baby, and his name stays largely out of the news while his lawyer keeps playing the “postpone” game.
