Can’t confirm this but Mark Steyn in for Rush Limbaugh just said that this story line was actually one that appeared in Batman in the early 80’s: a guy who enters a movie theater and guns down theater-goers.

hmm - I’ll have to go back and see what I can find - I have most of the early 80’s run. The bane story came out mid-late 90’s.
