A new Romney ad out this morning uses two isolated sentences from the Obamas speech to portray the president as demonizing business owners, continuing a push Romney and the Republicans have been making for a week. As Mason Adams noted earlier this week, a full reading of Obamas remarks makes it apparent that the president was arguing that government has a role in building the infrastructure roads, bridges, schools that support commerce.
Not sure why the paper wants to defend that.
Just shows that anyone can rise up to be president, even a street hustler with someone giving him $1B for a campaign.
The Team then explains: "The President's full remarks show that the 'that' in 'you didn't build that' clearly refers to roads and bridges--public infrastructure we count on the government to build and maintain."
That's bunk, and not only because "business" is more proximate to the pronoun "that" and therefore its more likely antecedent. The Truth Team's interpretation is ungrammatical. "Roads and bridges" is plural; "that" is singular. If the Team is right about Obama's meaning, he should have said, "You didn't build those."
Barack Obama is supposed to be the World's Greatest Orator, the smartest man in the world. Yet his campaign asks us to believe he is not even competent to construct a sentence.
Now even an original speech; Lenin said it first.
And we all know how well THAT went.
“Roads and bridges” is plural; “that” is singular. If the Team is right about Obama’s meaning, he should have said, “You didn’t build those.”
Nailed it. Not to mention...no businessman/woman, self-made or otherwise, no employee, no garbage collector, no homeless person, no millionaire or billionaire ever claimed they DID build the roads & bridges.
Some ancient history. In 1926 there was about 1000 miles of dirt road in the U.S.
There were 1800 automobile manufactures.
The industry forced the building of roads.

Even if he WAS referring to roads, bridges, water etc., why did he feel the need to lecture business people about something so patently obvious? Because he fears and despises them, that’s why. Deep, deep, irreparable (and justified) inferiority complex, translating into destructive ideology and policies.
Actual title of the article:
Obamas Roanoke speech becomes fodder for Romney ad
It was businesses first, then roads and bridges. Why build roads and bridges if there’s no businesses to use them?
Lets go out on a limb and say that is what Obama was TRYING to say.
Those business owners paid the taxes (both PERSONAL and BUSINESS) to build those roads, so YES THEY DID BUILD THAT!
Their businesses brought employees and consumers to the area to pay TAXES that paid for those, so he is still WRONG and CLUELESS!
owebama hates America. The commiecrats can try to spin his words all they want to but it does not change the fact that
OWEBAMA HATES AMERICA!
Bingo!!!!!!!!!! Great catch.
The broader point is this: All countries have roads and post offices and schools. Those things alone don’t make a country great.
What makes this country great is our political and economic systems that emphasize the freedom of the individual. Obama does not and never will understand this.
