When Beijing kicked off its 2008 Olympics, the ceremony celebrated an ideal China. Sweatshops, the Cultural Revolution and the absence of democracy went unmentioned. But the West is more sophisticated so next weeks opening of the London Games will go for the gold in historical guilt, re-opening old wounds and national self-loathing. The July 27 ceremony, conceived by Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, will pay careful attention to Britains shame, with tableaux devoted to the denial of voting rights to women, Industrial Revolution pollution, the Great Depression and exploitation of the workers.

Yet more reasons to watch the Olympics on a DVR. Between the ever lengthening commercials, weepy stories of personal tragedy, and Mr. Mouth himself Bob Costas, I'll be able to watch all the actual sports for an evening in about an hour.
From the same people that give you unending “uplifting” personal vignettes, double standard fawning over ANY black athlete, “triumphs over adversity”, and the Chinese as some sort of gods for their “miraculous” open ceremony.
I’ll be watching Gilligan’s Island reruns rather than the ChickFlick Pussylmpics.
I Like Billy Joel of America, singing "We didn't start the fire". Naming historic and iconic figures in America's history. Billy seems to be saying please do not blame his generation. A good idea, Danny seems to miss this obvious fact. As in "Don't blame me governor, I wasn't even born then" (Chuckle).
I will probably watch the boxing competition and that’s about it.
His Grace the Duke of Wellington had something to say about being labeled an Anglo-Irish, hee hee.
His Grace the Duke of Wellington had something to say about being labeled an Anglo-Irish, hee hee. What you are getting at is this would be like us Yanks hiring Spike Lee to direct some future Olympics opening ceremony.
If it were me, I’d fill the stadium with water and UNAPOLOGETICALLY reenact Nelson at Trafalgar or any of the other magnificent triumphs of white Christian UK history, including the vast majority of British colonialism.
The Roman used to do that in the Coliseum including naval battles. But of course we like in such a more “understanding” age.
It is very obvious that we are not the only people afflicted with Myth Makers In "Higher" Education. But the false teaching that led to Obama here & the shame described in Great Britain, is no more credible than the new Clothes that Hans Christian Andersen described in his little fable about the Emperor & his wonderful tailors.

Anti-capitalist propaganda is an important way that libtards can promote socialist and statist agenda.
Karl Marx himself, could have written this.
If the Olympic organizing committee gives you the commission to produce their opening ceremony and you put on something like this...you are a goatse. I would hate to have paid good money to fly over to London and watch that...especially because it’s my birthday.
This article is a complete crock.
Firstly, no one, even here in the UK, knows what the show is going to be. So the idea that the NY Times has the inside scoop, when the Sun, Times, Guardian et al dont, even now as I post at 10pm BST on the 25th, is a crock.
There has been a highly securitised preview last night, and only today have any vague and I mean very vague snippets of news filtered out to the British media, let alone the NY Times. And all we know is that those who attended the last preview have said it was and will be ‘incredible’, ‘spectacular’ etc. But still even tonight as I post, no concrete facts have slipped out.
I actually think the writer has written a sarcastic piece on what the ceremony might be, as a satire on PC-ism. But I can pretty much assure you, as a Brit, who is following the Olympics, that what is in his article is conjecture, hype and speculation.
Oh, I devoutly hope you’re right. That sounded horrible. I was going to say if he was going for something that dismal, he might have been better off basing the thing on “Trainspotting”. Imagine a couple hundred dancers dressed as Mark Renton, dancing on (and in) replicas of the worst toilet in Scotland. Now that I’d tune in for.
Thank you indeed for the heads up. I have a suspicion you are right. A slightly red faced grin from this Freeper. I wonder if it followed the demand for a moment of silence, to remember the Israeli athletes so senselessly murdered in Munich 1972 ?
It gave someone an idea, maybe.
How’d you get my passport photo?.
LOL.
