Hoyer: Food Stamps, Unemployment Insurance 2 'Most Stimulative' Things for Economy By Elizabeth Harrington July 17, 2012
(CNSNews.com) House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Tuesday that food stamps and unemployment insurance are the two "most stimulative" t things you can do for the economy.
During a pen and pad briefing with reporters on Capitol Hill, Hoyer was asked if any Democrats are reconsidering the wisdom of letting the Bush tax cuts expire at years end for the top income earners given the still struggling U.S. economy.
"I havent talked to any who are of that mind," said Hoyer. "If you talk to economists, they will tell you there are two things that are the most stimulative that you can do -- ones unemployment insurance, the others food stamps, okay?
Why is that? he said. Because those folks who receive those resources must spend them. And theyll spend them almost upon receipt. Most economists with whom I talk believe that those with significant discretionary income, that thats not the case.
Unless action is taken by Congress, the Bush tax cuts will expire on Jan. 1, 2013. Originally enacted in 2001 and 2003, President Barack Obama and Congress renewed the cuts for all income-brackets for two years in 2010.
Obama and the Democrats are now proposing that the rates be extended for one more year, until the end of 2013, for people earning less than $250,000 a year, while Republicans want the rates extended for people in all income brackets.

Yep, how else was I able to buy Mercedes?
Wat!?!
Steny doesn’t know that Atlas Shrugges is a novel. He thinks it’s a blueprint.
“I havent talked to any who are of that mind,” said Hoyer. “If you talk to economists, they will tell you there are two things that are the most stimulative that you can do — ones unemployment insurance, the others food stamps, okay?
This completely overlooks the fact that in order to pay these you have to take the money OUT of the economy to begin with in the form of taxes! Sheesh!
The government should raise food stamps and unemployment benefits by 100% and give them to everyone.
THAT would assure prosperity for all.
Marveling at Steny and Nancy’s double digit IQ’s.
And tell us,Mr Hoyer, what are "things" numbers three to ten on your list of stimulative things? Is "aiding in the creation of private sector jobs" on the list?
No,I didn't think so.
In a Robust Economy, one filled with opportunity and growth...it wouldn't be very stimulating, it would be detrimental...but since we are in a Depression, and Hoyer verifies it with his statement.....the most stimulating thing 'they' can do in this environment is institute $bread$ lines. Keep those bellies full....
You mean when added together?
Dang. I have been so wrong. I thought working for an income, independent of the government, paying taxes, and being able to choose how to spend any (minimal) discretionary money, including which charities to fund... were the keys to improving the economy. I should look into this other lifestyle he’s promoting!
Any chance that either of those digits are greater than "two"?
then to hell with “creating jobs” and to hell with those rich people who bury their money in the back yard.
Put 300 million of us on food stamps and unemployment!
We’d be the world’s economic engine!
Eat your heart out, China!
Double-digit? More like single-digit.
Yep, an idiot. I received 74 weeks of “unemployment” at $275 a week (less FIT - take home $247) and I didn’t spend ONE DIME of that money. I saved it all (full disclosure - wife has very good job).
Guess I should reapply for my 25 more weeks and see if they’ll give me food stamps too!
That had gotta be about the best “cartoons” I’ve seen in a long time!
Excellent!
