Thanks will read later. But it never dawned on me: why would a 17 year old high school girl in 1961 need a passport? It's not like today, where it's common for teens to travel abroad at that age. In the early 1960s, travel abroad was rare for anyone.

When you are a youngster and part of a family and subculture that is part of the International Communist movement, passports are very important and common.

In the early 1960s, travel abroad was rare for anyone. They used to live in Northwest Washington State. Although a passport wasn't necessary for travel into Canada at that time, perhaps as a result of Stanly Dunham being ex-military, they just got one as a matter of course. (or habit.)
