I personally believe he was assassinated, and it was all covered up. He made too many powerful people angry, and he was right that we should have immediately pushed the Soviets out of eastern europe instead of meekly surrendering all those millions of poor people.

The particular vertebrate broken (in his neck) in the car accident had been broken before in another mishap years before. This made the vertebrate much more delicate and susceptible to minor injury, such as a slow speed auto accident. Gen Patten had many bones broken in the course of his life. He was almost the early Evil Knievel of the 20th century. His family asked for the investigations of his death to stop and he requested that the driver of the truck not be investigated. It was just an accident.
